The M-4 Falchion assault rifle entered Systems Alliance service in 2121 and quickly became one of the most influential infantry weapons of the early twenty-second century. Manufactured by Hahne-Kedar, then considered a relative newcomer in the military small-arms market, the Falchion established the company as a serious competitor to older defense contractors and set the standard for future Alliance rifle design.
At first glance, the M-4 appeared conventional by modern mass accelerator standards. Like other contemporary firearms, it used a compact internal ammunition block from which microscopic projectiles were shaved during firing. This mode is optimized for suppressive fire and anti-shield engagement. Against kinetic barriers, sustained impacts from dozens of fast-moving slugs create cumulative field stress, gradually overwhelming defensive systems through volume rather than individual shot power. In semi-automatic mode, the weapon’s VI commands the shave module to carve a significantly larger fragment from the ammunition block. Simultaneously, the rifle’s mass effect field geometry shifts, reducing the slug’s mass during acceleration before restoring it near the muzzle. The result is a heavier, armor-piercing projectile with far greater stopping power than a standard assault-rifle round. While slower to fire, semi-automatic mode is capable of penetrating body armor, damaging light cover, and inflicting severe trauma on shield-depleted targets.
This dual-mode capability made the M-4 Falchion exceptionally popular among Alliance infantry. A trained soldier could use the same weapon for suppressive fire, shield stripping, mid-range precision shots, and anti-armor engagement without changing platforms.
