About This Title

Way back in Summer 2024 we reported that the FAA was moving airspace tied to Newark (EWR) from a Long Island TRACON facility to Philadelphia. The effort enacted under the prior Administration was intended to bypass issues hiring at the Long Island facility amid rumors of high stress and a toxic work environment. At the time, the FAA secured a 2 year relocation agreement to place a dozen controllers previously on Long Island at the Philly facility.

The agreement expired a week or so ago and has triggered further staffing shortages for the EWR airspace being managed. Of the 12 controllers who were moved, 6 chose to return to the Long Island facility effective this month.

Delays are expected to worsen as a result of the expiration. FAA has said almost any level of sick time at the Philly facility is now enough to force staffing triggers after the loss of the 6 controllers. The recent comments from the DOT Secretary about sick time causing flight delays are a secondary impact of thin staffing after the 6 controllers moved.

The airspace move to Philly TRACON and the 2 year staff agreement was originally reached under the Biden Administration. The agreement mandated the temporary relocation of a group of controllers for up to two years.  In November 2025 Trump Administration officials secured agreements from 6 of those relocated controllers to extend their stay in Philadelphia for an additional two years until Summer 2028.

TRACON staffers are responsible for guiding planes to and from cruising altitude as they leave or approach an airport. The Newark airspace includes Newark Liberty International Airport, Teterboro Airport, Morristown Airport and Essex County Airport in Fairfield.
