Hey folks! Instead of a Friday WIP, here's a failed Wick Editor / Rive "collaboration" project. I "finished" this earlier this week, but when I decided it wasn't working, I put aside what progress I had made and began work on Fawn's Finale episode. So as the title says, this is a failed project, there will be nothing more to this project than what you see here.
As you can see and may remember from previous musings of mine, this project was an attempt to make a game in Wick Editor but using Rive animations, hoping to aim for better animation fidelity and quality, while still giving you interactive elements. Alas, it kind of works, but ultimately fails for multiple reasons.
Reason 1) File sizes. I already knew that importing gifs into Wick Editor would bloat the HTML5 file, but it also turned out that Wick Editor would just refuse to export the project, due to the resulting HTML5 file being huge. So, any project with large gifs and lots of frames would be impossible. This also causes issues with file loading times and Itchio even allowing the file onto their hosting (Itchio has a 1gig limit for games).
Reason 2) For the files to fit inside of the HTML5 file, they have to be small (dimension wise as well as file size). As you can see, this causes a lot of visible pixelation, which is made more noticeable when placed next to the sharp vectors of Wick's text and assets. That the gifs have to be so small makes the whole venture of "using Rive animations to improve quality" impossible.
Reason 3) For some reason, the gifs Rive exports have a strange glitch in Wick Editor: only the first frame looks normal, but all other frames look hollow, like some kind of weird Photoshop filter. To fix this glitch, I have edit them using an online gif editor, which damages the quality slightly and triples the file size of said gif. Add to the fact doing all these stages just to have a gif to test makes it laborious to use Rive animations in Wick.
There may be more reasons than this that I've forgotten, but using Rive animations in Wick is a lost cause. I'll just have to use a simpler art style and accept Wick's limitations if I make more games. Rive can be for fancier, more complex looking animations, and Wick can focus on games.
It's a shame it didn't work out, but I gave it a good try. Included with the post are the higher quality gifs Rive exported. They're simple because I didn't see much reason making fancier gifs for a failed project lol.
Anyway, I'll be back next week with a Fawn WIP. TTFN, and thanks for the support!
