gerhard96 - I'm stopping Licensed Characters
infoAbout This Title
Hello everyone, Following my temporary ban, I choose to make a drastic change in what I publish: I will no longer do Licensed Character from now. First here is a quick TLDR and then detailled explanations and a FAQ if you're interested.
TLDR
I got banned from DeviantArt for publishing "underage content"
It's Licensed Character (from game/anime/manga) that cause problem as they have a "canonical age"
Random Character seem safe as they don't have any age to refer from
How character look seem irrelevant, it's a pure number thing
I was hesitating between retiring or continuing with Random Character only
I choose the latter and I will no longer make Licensed Character
Any request I have including Licensed Character is cancelled
My request list is frozen for about a week, time for me to contact each person having their request cancelled
Then I'll reopen slot. I expect requests to go down a lot without doing Licensed Character
I already have three weeks of content ready, but I need to edit some for removing Licensed Character
I'll start publishing again on the September 21 week, at my usual pace of 4 publications per week
ExplanationsI have been banned from DeviantArt for a full week. Reason is "posting underage content" (like Nagaroto, Zelda ALBW or Momo Yaoyorozu) and posting too much NSFW content (naked facesitting, rimming, golden shower). Honestly, it seems a bit random as Zelda ALBW don't even have a canonical age, and we can see plenty of lewd stuff of Nagaroto or any MHA girl on booru, twitter or even on DeviantArt itself. Anyway that's DeviantArt rules, I'm not going to argue with that.
It's not the first time I got publication removed, and when it comes to underage content it's always Licensed Character (character from games, from anime, from show...). That's pretty logic : these characters can have some sort of "canonical" age in their license, while an OC or a random character don't have age at all. How a character look seem totally irrelevant.
In my bio I specify that my work is fictional, girls are 18+, non-canon and completely unrelated to the original source. But it seem irrelevant too.
Following the ban I was wondering if I should just retire : after all I'm just a casual guy here, not a pro. I have a job, house chores, friends and family and I do AI for a hobby. It takes a lot of time to generate multiple prototypes, choose a nice one, edit it until it's good for being publishable, correct artifacts, upscale it, add english captions, japanese captions... Even the act of publishing itself take time, you have to choose the right tags on DeviantArt, on Pixiv. And all the "social part" of maintaining these accounts (chatting with everyone, answering back to any message). No complains here, I do love that, but it take a lot time. Well, almost all my leisure time. And everything I do is free, I never gain a single cent from my work - on the contrary I'm paying about 35$ per month to be able to generate AI.
So yeah I was heavily considering about retiring to get leisure time back - and ngl, I still think it would be "the right thing to do". In the end I choose to keep continuing publishing content, but it has to be with some changes. Because DA only temporary ban me is a way to warn me. Next misconduct I do they will terminate my account.By not doing Licensed Character anymore I guess I should be protected from the underage stuff. It will also have some side effect on the number of requests I get : it should go down pretty much (obviously people love their waifu way more than just random char). But... again, ngl, I see that as a plus. Requests take a lot of time compared to me doing an image on my side - I was totally struggling with them.
To give you numbers, before my ban I got 14 requests to do. Most of them include Licensed Character. I plan to contact every single user, explaining why I will not do their request in the end. Once I'm good with my to-do list and I have a better foresight of how many requests I still get, I'll reopen them. Until that any new request is frozen - whatever it's about Licensed Character or not.
I already have three weeks of content ready - it was images done before my ban. But still, next week I'm going to continue my break and not post anything. It will allow me to contact each requestor and to edit my ready-to-publish content because yeah, some of theses images what about Licensed Character.
On the 21 September week I'll start publishing again, at my usual pace of 4 images per week. Thank you everyone, and see you soon !FAQQ : Why stopping ANY Licensed Character? Just check their age online and do 18+ char only?
A : It would be too much of a headache. I cannot be sure of any age, I cannot refer at how they look. Zelda ALBW (no official age) and Momo Yaoyorozu (never watch MHA I did think she was adult) are good example. Next ban will be the end of the road for me, and I have to be super precautionary. I understand it can be frustrating for you, but basically, for my situation, it does not worth the risk to do Licensed Character anymore.
Q : And posting Licensed Character images on other website ? Just don't post it to DeviantArt.
A : I do have a Pixiv and Patreon but I post the exact same images there than on DeviantArt. Making every image with a "Licensed Character" version and "Random Character" version is unrealistic. Like I said in explanations I already struggle to keep my 4-images-per-week pace, having to make twice variation per image would nearly double the time needed.
Q : I'm from Pixiv / Patreon. Why your DeviantArt ban concern us here?
A : Because Pixiv and DeviantArt are equally important to me. I get a lot of exposition from both sites, and the day I get ban from one would be the day I stop all. Patreon is less critical.
Q : Can't you do my favorite Waifu privately?
A : I don't do private request, Licensed Character or not. Requests take a lot of time / will and I do them for free. I have to get some kind of "rewards" in the process for the time invested. My reward here is that I publish them and gain likes, views, comments and exposure from them.
Q : What about your NSFW stuff that get removed? Risk of ban too?
A : Probably. I'll try to be careful about that but... it's hard for me to deduce what kind of fetish image is "Deviant-Art compliant". I do think it's the underage content that's the most risky. Let's hope it will be enough!
