So, after several years of putting it off after a frustrating start, I went back and replayed moon Remix RPG Adventure. Something about this playthrough finally clicked and it became my go-to evening game for the past week or so, until I eventually beat it. If you haven't heard of moon beyond anything other than "game that inspired Undertale", it's a self-proclaimed "anti-RPG" where you're transported into a game world as a ghostly bystander following in the brutal aftermath of a typical RPG "hero". It's about a lot more than that, of course. It's a game with no combat, a game where your main currency and threat is time, a game with purposely obtuse mechanics and isn't afraid to waste precious minutes by the dozen. It's a frustrating, bullshit, meandering experience. And I fucking love it. I haven't stopped thinking about it since I beat it. I'm not sure I can recommend it unless you're extremely patient and willing to roll with the punches of a game out to just fuck with you sometimes (and not in a Dark Souls hard mode way). But damn, am I glad to have experienced it. No spoilers, just listen to Warp Wet Woods by The Sleepwalk and see if you vibe with it, and if you do play it, READ THE INSTRUCTION MANUAL.
After beating moon, I immediately bought Stray Children, a game by the same creators made some 20+ years later with many similar elements and other titles under their belts. Started it yesterday, and... boy, am I glad to have beaten moon first. Can't wait to see more.
