Karp - Get Carried 002
infoAbout This Title
At a desolate stretch of land outside of Metropolis, Superman watched on as Toyman shot a laser gun at a target. The purple beam traveled some ways, then left a scorching black mark on the dummy's chest.
“Nice aim.” Superman praised.
“I even practiced a 360 no-scope, wanna see it?” Toyman said, looking up from the rifle in his hands, asking in a tone searching for approval.
Superman waved the back of his hand at the little man, giving him the go-ahead.
“Alright. Here goes nothing.”
Then, much to Superman's mild shock, the squirt actually managed to do it! Spinning around like a dreidel, he accurately placed a laser beam directly between the dummy's eyes.
“Bullseye! Heh heh, now you try.” Toyman happily cheered, then tossed the gun to Superman.
Seeing the young man's eager gaze, and hopeful expression, Superman could only sigh. Who said he wasn't a good guy?
Then, a small spark of competitiveness gripped his heart, and he began to float in place. Then, spinning like a drill, he unloaded the gun, hitting not one, but five targets seemingly instantaneously.
“Show off.” Toyman pouted, crossing his arms. “Your toy isn't even as strong as it could be.”
“Oh? How about a little wager then. If you can improve its efficacy in a week without compromising the energy capacity in the magazine, I'll give you your own workshop to play around in to your hearts desire.”
“Really?!” Toyman asked in surprise.
“Really, really.” Superman calmly replied.
“Then there's no time to lose!” Toyman exclaimed, practically running towards the exit, and the waiting hovercar.
As Superman was going to join him, a microscopic earpiece he took everywhere with him pinged. Exercising his fine muscle control in his ear, he flexed a certain sequence with his tympanic membrane, activating the device.
“Sir, we've found it. A six kilogram sample of Element K has been retrieved. It's been contained at Sight A.” Kelex's robotic voice said.
“Thank you for informing me, Kelex. I'll be there shortly.” Superman said in a very quiet voice that only the speaker could pick up. Then, turning to the car, he waved goodbye. “Good luck with improving the weapon. It was something I cobbled together between Luthor's previous work, and my own inspiration. Its purpose is to have a weaker setting for a relatively harmless crowd control and law enforcement, meant to replace the lethality of firearms. At the same time, it must have a stronger setting that when combined with dozens or hundreds of others, could threaten a metahuman. I believe in you.”
“...and if I remove this, and cross a wire here…” Toyman muttered to himself, completely zoning out the rest of the world as his mind got to work.
Superman didn't take it personally, as he too occasionally found himself lost in another world when exploring the deeper layers of science. Watching the car depart back to Metropolis, Superman didn't follow it, and instead turned northward.
Flying up to the North Pole, he eventually came across the camo-cloaked location of the Fortress of Solitude. To the common eye, this location was no different than a random patch of ice. Completely normal, and unremarkable. But that was just a hologram.
Entering through a gaping maw of an entrance, he entered the crystalline hall, and once more marveled at the technology that had created this structure. The ability to pre-fab a building that was sturdy, came with computers & plumbing was a feat of genius.
“Master Jor would be proud of your achievements too, Master Kal.” Kelex-now occupying a hovering golden droid with no legs, and a tv screen for a face-said in an attempt at comforting him.
“In terms of science? Most definitely. As for my other aspirations…perhaps.” Superman said, shaking his head with a sigh.
“You are the last progeny of Krypton. Whatever you do, Master Kal, I shall execute your vision to the best of my abilities.” The droid said, placing a hand over his chest, and bowed.
“Thanks, Kelex, I needed to hear that. Now. Let's take a look at this Element K.” Superman smiled at the bot, then took on a heavy air as he flew towards Sight A.
Situated somewhat further away from the primary living quarters of the Fortress of Solitude, and down a lengthy tunnel was a place where Superman had built to conduct experiments. Although he hadn't had much time to build much, what he had accomplished was the basis for an improved Earth.
Studying Jor'El's life's work, and many other technologies of Krypton, he had leveraged the genius-level intellect of his brain to get a decent grasp of his home planet's tech. The hovering car, for example, was mostly a recreation from what he had read. In the future, he would take the practical knowledge he had earned from that construction to create a flying car factory, and eventually, produce space worthy craft.
Furthermore, he had dabbled a bit in chemistry, robotics, and energy. His ultimate dream was to uplift society with unlimited energy, and a place where all the tedious or annoying labor was done by machines.
To accomplish such a goal, he could very easily wave around his ‘super-sized dick’ and become some insane warlord. Such a methodology would see him as some sort of ‘God Emperor’ to the Earthlings, and result in tens of millions of casualties. If, that is, he could even accomplish such a thing. For as powerful as he was, this world was not so simple. Magic, celestials, and apparently the combination of Marvel & DC into one plane…
No, if he took on the path of the out and proud conqueror, he'd be struck down by the combined forces of Earth's mightiest heroes. It was one thing to be something of a rogue element in Metropolis, and an entirely different thing to be using his heat vision to erase cities off the map. Instead, he would build a team around himself, and force change to the world through innovation & a pinch of muscle. He wagered 90% of all people would prefer a leader who provides them with quality free food, healthcare, education, electricity, and security from aliens/other metahumams over anyone else.
As he had these thoughts, Superman had almost reached the containment zone for Element K. But before he did, he glanced at several large tubes full of a milky white substance. In his quest to harness unlimited energy-a quest Jor'El had pursued leading to Krypton's destruction-he had found himself as something of a biologist.
In his mind, there was no better generator of potential energy than Kryptonian biology. This had become his primary project as of late, and he was close to a huge breakthrough. These tubes housed modified DNA, and the way they reacted to yellow sunlight was magnificent. A world full of endless energy was within sight.
This study of DNA had the added benefit of enhancing his own strength. Although Superman had not yet injected himself with anything, many of his tests involved placing his cells under various conditions. Different temperatures, environments, and types of light all yielded many data points from which he could draw upon. To this end, he hoped to eliminate several weaknesses-such as that of red light-or the chunk of Kryptonite he was going to see now. Of course, one of these days, he would steal the arc reactor doing nothing at Stark Labs to study, but that was for another day.
Changing into a radiation resistant suit, he entered a laboratory, and observing through a clear window, looked at a glowing green rock.
Typing away at a keyboard, he manipulated a pair of robo arms within the testing facility. Chipping away a piece, he deposited it into a solution, and ran a system to detect its waves. For the next several days, he tirelessly worked on various tests and diagnostics, figuring out what he could about this very lethal rock. The only breaks he took were to fly into the sun for an hour-long recharge, an hour in the VR simulator to hone his combat skills, stop some crimes at super speeds and some short debriefs from KalTech.
Dedicating his time to science, time flew by, and nearly a week had passed since he had recruited Toyman. Standing up from a microscope, Superman massaged his neck, and sighed. Although he could zoom in very far, his eyes couldn't pick up every spectrum, and a tool like a microscope was surprisingly handy to him. That said, he had made some good progress when it came to understanding kryptonite, and that if he modified his genes to express themselves in a certain way, the menacing green rock would no longer be an issue.
Sitting up from a workbench, Superman flew into the central hall of his Fortress of Solitude, and promptly sat down on a couch. Using a remote control, he activated a giant screen, instantly giving him access to Metropolis's camera security network. Luthor had convinced the police to install them, and in the process got both a sweet bit of pocket change, and a nice spy network. As for Superman, it acted somewhat as a means to test public opinion, and spot crime as it happened. Sitting on top of a skyscraper was fun sometimes, but he had better things to do than to hangout on rooftops like some brooding Dark Knight or friendly neighborhood Spiderman.
It also helped that Kelex had hacked the system, and could blur, delete, or create evidence of anything taking place. The Kryptonian AI was so advanced that the generic Earth tech would make him look like magic.
Watching people go about their day sort of felt like city ASMR. It was quite peaceful to watch the steady progress of Metropolis. These past three months since he had arrived in this world, Superman had gone on a bender breaking legs, and disappearing some of the worst offenders. Leveraging soft power through KalTech, and the hidden hardpower of an S-tier metahuman, he had forced homeless into mandatory rehabilitation programs, offered more jobs than ever before, and violently crushed organized crime one tibia at a time.
Anyone in the city could identify a crook based on either his broken leg, or hand. With the help of the police database, Kelex's mind, and his own research, there wasn't a single crime family, extortionist ring, gang, or group of burglars who had been let off. The streets of Metropolis were clean, and crime didn't pay.
In the future, he would have Kelex single out those hackers who had scammed the elderly out of their life savings, and give them a taste of justice too. White Collar criminals wouldn't be left off either. Losing your bank account was one of the worst things that could be done to you. Before long, he would take such cases internationally, although for those criminals, he would be more discreet.
As he had that thought, he saw a press conference with the mayor speaking about the opening of a new park funded by KalTech popped up on one of the screens. From the looks of things it was generic politician shit. The suit was blabbering on about his thanks for KalTech's donations, and how good it would be for the community, blah blah blah. However, things looked like they were going to be spicy when a black haired slip of a woman stood up to ask a question from the presscore.
It was none other than the ‘fated lover’ of the Man of Steel. Personally, Superman felt no attraction towards the woman, and he was damn happy he didn't have to do that dog & pony show of saving her curious ass every time she snooped around Luthor's chicanery. Turning up the volume, he listened in.
“Mayor Berkowitz, Lois Lane of the Daily Planet. There have been increasing concerns over the rule of law & order within Metropolis. Just this past week, famous businessman, Bruno Manheim disappeared alongside a laundry list of his crimes suddenly being revealed. Although the evidence appears damning, this case largely resembles what happened to Luthor. How can the citizens rest assured that they won't be snatched up next? Where is the jury by their peers? Where is justice?” Lois asked in a biting, cynical professional journalistic tone.
“Ah, Miss Lane, a pleasure as always. I can assure the members of the public that Manheim's case was thoroughly investigated, and he truly did extort several families out of their property. The city DA is at this very moment working to return the stolen homes.” Berkowitz proudly declared, then pointed at another journalist. “Charlie.”
“Thank you, Mayor. With fall around the corner-”
“Now just wait a minute, Mayor Berkowitz!” Lois said, raising her voice over the other reporter. “Are you not at all concerned with the loss of life? Metropolis may execute the death penalty, but a judge should decide a criminal's fate, not some vigilante.”
“Charming, Miss Lane. Charming. You're not insinuating once again without evidence, that Superman is behind the Manheim case, are you? Ever since he's started patrolling these streets, crime has dwindled to a trickle. Before I had a dozen break-ins, a pair of rapes, and one murder to deal with every week. Those figures have been cut in half or more.” Berkowitz huffed, adjusting his tie.
“The wave of broken bones, and-” Lois tried to get out, but was booed down by a group of people who attended the grand opening of the park.
“Boo, get out of here!” A random man started.
“Superman rescued me from a burning building, shame on you, young woman.” A granny said, shaking her cane.
“No one likes you Lane, you stick in the mud.” A party-holic girl said in a bratty accent.
“Come on kids, let's go.” An African American man-John Henry Irons-said to his children, ushering them away from the venue.
“Security, please escort Miss Lane out, she has caused an unruly ruckus on this, a joyful day.” The mayor said towards a big guy in a suit & sunglasses. “I do hope you are more amenable when accepting your prize at the Excalibur Awards tomorrow, Miss Lane.”
“Get your hands off me!” Lois said, pulling her arm back. “I'll go, but this story is bigger than any of us, Berkowitz. If it's true…” She said trailingly, then shook her head, and stomped out of the venue with a determined look on jer face.
As for Berkowitz, he wiped down some mounting perspiration after listening to Lois's parting words, and continued to praise the opening of the park with a nervous, fake smile.
Uninterested in the speech, Superman changed the channel, blankly moving to other scenes across Metropolis.
That Lois Lane truly knew how to stir up trouble. Knowing her luck-aka plot armor-she'd probably be randomly investigating somewhere, and would catch Superman in the middle of an extreme act. That or she would discover that the new CEO of KalTech, her former associate, was actually a robot piloted by Kelex's AI.
‘Ugh. I have a million other important things to do, like meditating inside the sun, fighting in the sim, conducting science, or finding new metahumans to recruit. But no, Lois friggin Lane is going to somehow expose me to the world. That's attention I do not want right now.’
Thinking those thoughts, Superman drummed his fingers along the edge of the couch, deep in thought, trying to figure out a way to get rid of her without harming her. Afterall, although he was brutal to his enemies & criminal scum, that didn't mean he was some murderhobo who would crush anyone at the first sign of disagreement.
Hmm. With the assets of KalTech, why not just buy the Daily Planet, then reassign her to somewhere else, definitely not Gotham. Wouldn't want her hooking up with Bats then turning the dirt on him. Yes, this plan was feasible. Bump up her pay, promise to pay for a new car & home, then ship her off to some hip & happening place like Star City. Send that woman to Green Arrow, and see how he likes an investigative journalist with a chip on her shoulder! Better yet, she'll be on the other damn side of the country.
“Kal'El, you are a genius.” Superman said to himself with a smirk as he began sending out an order to robo-Kent to get the job done.
