The protagonist has never forgotten the dog he grew up with, a beloved companion who passed away years ago.
One day, he obtains a mysterious item called the *Return Collar*. It is a red leather collar with a blank name tag. According to its instructions, if someone writes the name of a lost loved one on the tag, clearly imagines their appearance, and places the collar around a human neck, the wearer will gradually change into that being.
Knowing exactly what it does, he writes the name of his late dog on the tag.
That night, while his roommate is absorbed in a video game, he quietly approaches from behind and fastens the collar around his neck.

His roommate assumes it is only a prank.
By the next morning, however, the collar begins to glow.
Each pulse of light reshapes his body. His masculine build softens, his chest develops, his waist changes, his face grows more feminine, and his hair reaches his shoulders. At first he is confused, while the protagonist watches carefully, already knowing where the changes are leading.
Soon, his behavior begins changing as well.
Being petted feels strangely comforting. When his name is called, he turns without thinking. When the protagonist holds out a hand, he instinctively places his own hand on it.
Even a bowl of milk placed on the floor slowly stops feeling ridiculous.
As the protagonist gently strokes his head, soft drooping ears emerge through his hair. A small bump appears above his hips and gradually grows into a full tail that moves naturally with his emotions.
At the beach, he happily chases a thrown frisbee and rushes back for praise, his tail wagging.
The sight makes the protagonist whisper,
“It really is you.”
Then memories begin to follow the body.
Familiar walking routes. Favorite places. The protagonist's scent. The comfort of being petted. Waiting by the door for him to return.
Memories that never belonged to his human life quietly settle into his mind as if they had always been there.
At last, when the protagonist calls the dog's name, she looks up with a gentle smile and happily wags her tail.
The *Return Collar* does not truly revive the dead.
*The body changes first. The memories follow afterward.*
It simply reshapes a living human, little by little, into the precious being someone desperately wished to meet again.

主人公には、ずっと忘れられない存在がいた。
幼い頃から長い年月を一緒に過ごし、数年前に亡くなった愛犬だった。
ある日、主人公は不思議な道具――*『帰還の首輪』*を手に入れる。
赤い革で作られた、ごく普通に見える首輪。
しかし空白の名札に「もう一度会いたい存在」の名前を書き、その姿を思い浮かべながら人間へ装着すると、着けられた者は少しずつ、その存在へ近づいていくという。
主人公は迷った末、名札に亡くなった愛犬の名前を書く。
そして夜。
同居人がソファに座り、ゲームへ夢中になっている隙に、主人公は背後からそっと近づく。
「ちょっと動くなよ」
「ん？ 何？」
返事を待たず、赤い首輪を首へ回す。
カチリ、と留め金が閉じた。
最初は当然、ただの悪戯だと思われた。
だが翌朝から、少しずつ変化が始まる。
首輪が淡く光るたび、男だった身体は女性らしい輪郭へ近づいていく。胸元が膨らみ、腰の形が変わり、顔立ちにも柔らかさが増していく。髪も肩まで伸び、声まで少しずつ変わっていった。
同居人は戸惑うが、主人公だけは、その変化をじっと見つめていた。
首輪は外見だけを変えるものではない。
時間が経つにつれ、仕草にも変化が現れ始める。
頭を撫でられると、なぜか心地よく感じる。
名前を呼ばれると自然に振り返る。
主人公が手を差し出せば、考えるより先に自分の手を重ねてしまう。
青い皿にミルクを入れて床へ置かれたときには怒っていたはずなのに、気づけばしゃがみ込み、妙に懐かしそうな顔で口をつけている。
そして、主人公が頭を優しく撫でている最中。
髪の間から、柔らかな垂れ耳が現れる。
腰の後ろにも小さな突起が生まれ、それは日を追うごとに長くなり、やがて感情に合わせて揺れる立派な尻尾へ変わっていった。
海へ遊びに行けば、投げられたフリスビーを夢中になって追いかける。
うまく取れれば主人公のもとへ駆け戻り、褒められるだけで嬉しそうに尻尾を振る。
その姿を見て、主人公は確信する。
「ああ……やっぱり、お前なんだ」
さらに変化が進むと、身体だけでなく心にも、見覚えのない記憶が増えていく。
散歩した道。
お気に入りだった場所。
主人公の匂い。
撫でてもらったときの安心感。
玄関で帰りを待っていた時間。
それらは人間として過ごしてきた記憶の間へ、昔からそこにあった思い出のように溶け込んでいく。
やがて彼女は、主人公の隣で丸くなり、懐かしい匂いを確かめるように寄り添う。
主人公が名前を呼ぶ。
彼女は嬉しそうに顔を上げ、尻尾を振った。

*姿が先に変わり、記憶があとから追いついてくる。*
人間だった誰かを少しずつ作り替え、

その大切な存在の姿と記憶を受け継ぎながら――
もう一度、主人公の隣で暮らし始める。
