tabletopaudio - New Ambience: Lighthouse
About This Title
A beacon in the dark, or a front row seat to tragedy. (Patreon patrons receive 6 additional versions of this track)
Greetings Patrons,
I started to watch the Robert Eggers film "The Lighthouse", and got about 20 minutes in before I had to stop and start sketching out the ideas for this track. It was so ominous, and threatening, and beautiful at the same time. About 2 days into working on this, I realized that this is actually a 'stealth' Cthulhu track as well! As I release this track today, I still haven't finished the film, so that's what I'll be up to later. Sometimes when you know, you know.
In my research for lighthouses, I came across a website called "The Association of Lighthouse Keepers" ( https://alk.org.uk/ ). Even better than knowing that this organization exists, was a collection of field recordings from actual fog horns. This track uses the Nash Point siren clip (albeit, pitched a bit so it didn't clash with the music too much!). You can listen to the original clip, and others, here.
Mark Korven, the film's composer, and already a favorite of mine, is known for his use of custom made, improvised instruments like his 'apprehension engine'. So I knew I had to come with something cool.
A couple of months ago, we were tossing out an old vacuum cleaner when I had the genius idea (or, idiotic, according to my wife, but she's fairly used to this by now) to cut off the hose. Originally I had planned to use it as percussive instrument like a guiro (rubbing a stick across the ridges), or as a whip horn (I made that term up, it's when you whip it around your head until it starts to make a sound, like blowing across a bottle). But, by far the best use, was blowing into it like you would a brass instrument. It makes a horrible, raspy, bassy sound that I loved. I used this in the music to echo the fog horn in the ambience. It's layered behind some low strings but you should be able to make it out.
I wanted the music to be as relentless as the wind and waves crashing against the rocks, so I chose massive low strings, pairing them with low woodwinds, tortured high strings, tremolo lute ensemble, and percussion. All of this was designed to echo the natural environment musically.
The ambience is many layers of waves on rocks, various winds and the foghorn. Occasional ship bells can be heard offshore.
As this is in sneak peak mode, I've included the mixed version, as well as ambience-only, and music-only versions here. Additionally, I created an interior version which is centered in the lamp room and features the massive rotating lamp on a metal track, as well as rain and spray rattling windows, guttering candles, and the sound of wind and waves outside. There's also a 'no lamp' version which, like the title implies, removes the lamp and acts as a downstairs living quarters of the lighthouse. This would make a great seaside cabin on a stormy bluff.
Page tier patrons and up can stream this track directly from the site, and Squire tier and up can access all the alternate tracks there as well. All the tracks are included below as downloads.
Thank you all, as always, for your continuing support.
Best,
Tim
