Arcanyx Studios - The Unspoken Math Behind Full-Time Skyrim Modding: The Global Economics of Our Modding Scene
About This Title
A quick behind-the-scenes look at the data models I have been running for my research project using an ancient tool called RStudio.
Converting raw Patreon dollars into Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) highlights how geography dictates modding operations:
Martimius (Philippines): $2,648/mo nominal $ $7,597/mo real local purchasing equivalent.
Anbeegod (China): $3,048/mo nominal $7,954/mo real local purchasing equivalent.
Collecting revenue in strong Western currencies (USD/EUR) while paying domestic overhead in Southeast Asia or Mainland China creates massive economic leverage. What looks like modest tip-jar income on paper functionally acts like an executive salary locally, allowing creators to treat mod development as a full-time, self-sustaining career. In some cases, they can delegate a significant degree of work to others. I have a support team based out of the Phillippines and they make an hourly wage of $6 an hour.
In higher cost-of-living regions like the US, that identical dollar amount functions primarily as seed capital subsidizing audio engineering, studio production, and human voice talent rather than paying the mortgage. It shows how global exchange rates quietly shape which projects get built and how creators sustain them.
Rudeboy asked about paywalled content modder. Most of them don't have their earnings on full display but we can estimate. Lilyrim is one of my favorite modders who releases mods monthly. They are very cute outfits that she gives folks. I myself have contributed to her for years. She I believe is based out of the Hong Kong/Taiwan area.
Big thing is if you desire to do content like that because of Nexus policy you will have a difficult time with networking and expanding your reach. I hope folks can understand one of the reasons why Nexus mods prohibits them from having their Patreon on the Nexus Mods page. Nexus = 100% Tip/Donations only.
Part of me thinks some start off non-profit and then eventually branch off of the Nexus once they acquire a strong follower base. That is how it seems that even Martimius did. Anbeegod I think opened a Patreon after developing his Discord community based on his growth curve. I will never go for profit though. As you can see, there is no need for me to do so due to my geographic location. I can DoorDash to raise funds, but others like Anbeegod and Martimius are unable to do so. At the same time, it forces them to treat modding as a business than as a hobby.
