akabur - 451 - I'm done with Suikoden V.
About This Title
FREAKING Suikoden V, man. That game is--No, wait, I forgot the introduction! Hello and welcome to another Monday Post. Yes, I know, it's hard to believe, but it's been a week already. It feels like only yesterday I was talking about Suikoden, and here we are, and it's time to talk about Suikoden again. Suikoden, Suikoden, FUCKING SUIKODEN!
THE SHAME. Let me just come clean and say I didn't beat the game. I just gave up. The final dungeon was a damn nightmare. It's a very confusing and completely unnecessary puzzle, which by itself would just be annoying, but it also has random enemy encounters every five seconds. As a result, it's impossible to keep track of all the switches and pathways. I was very determined to make it through, but eventually I realized that I had completely stopped enjoying the game a while back, and now I was moving into blatant hate territory. I decided to admit defeat and just give up because... what was the point anymore?
A BROKEN MESS. I don't know why nobody warned me, but half of this game's story, mechanics, and presentation is being held together with glue and duct tape. Maybe I'm the only one who sees this, but the more I played, the more obvious it became. The turning point came with a cutscene where one of the male characters pretends to be a woman for laughs. That scene was not funny. It served no purpose for the story. And they spent time modeling a cross-dressed version of this character when there were many instances where the main characters could have used alternative costumes. For example, Lyon, who was lying in a hospital bed in her full fighting gear. Obviously, there were a lot of problems behind the scenes during development, including resource mismanagement.
NOTHING WORKS PROPERLY! The sad thing is that the handful of things that do work, work really well, and the game has a lot of potential. But the execution is absolutely abysmal. The outdoor bath is another example. Why add another version of the bath when you couldn't even finish the first one? This new bath is mixed. Yay. A big freaking difference when all you do is stare into space without blinking. Oh, and one of the girls I happened to have on the team didn't even take off her clothes.
I WISH I HAD GIVEN UP SOONER! The castle is another collection of nonsense, with an indoor cemetery and corridors and rooms that make no sense at all. And during the night scenes, it looks like the prince forgot to pay the electricity bill for some of the rooms. The freaking tavern looks eerie as hell, with people just standing there. Also, the castle gets upgraded twice, but it's never telegraphed through the story. There isn't even a little scene saying, "Hey, we figured out how to lower the water level, so now you have an extra floor!" No, nothing like that. You just get extra space without any explanation.
I WANT WHAT HE HAS! And to add insult to injury, when I was near the end of the game and raiding the baddie's castle, I realized that his castle was fucking fantastic! Both outside and inside. Meanwhile, all I got was a weird-ass tower in the middle of the lake. To hell with this... I had a lot of screenshots prepared for this post, but I think I'll just stop here. What's the point of ranting about this now? Time to move on and forget that I spent almost 70 hours on this game, only to end up overwhelmed with negativity by the end of it. No more Suikoden V for me. And apologies to the fans of the game. Don't take it personally, please -_-
CLEANSING THE PALATE. To recover from all the horrors of the final dungeon of Suikoden, I had to return to my ultimate comfort game: URBZ for GBA. Just to make sure I could still enjoy video games. Riding around the city on my hoverboard and hanging out with the dudes really brought me back spiritually. But I think I'll stay away from JRPGs for another week, just to be sure. Freaking Suikoden, man... -_-
TO OTHER NEWS. What else caught my eye last week? Well, a trailer for an upcoming indie game called "Kingmakers." Judging from the trailer, it's a... urm... a little bit of everything, really. I think you'd be better off watching the trailer yourself. The reason it caught my attention was the attractive female character who showed up during the first few minutes of the trailer. ^^
LOLLIPOP CHAINSAW 2 was announced, and it looks very modern. (Old game on the left, new game on the right, obviously.) Don't know what else to say. Unreal Engine assets strike again. Pure visual boredom, which I'm sure will sell well upon release no matter what. Whatever, moving on -_-
LEAF. Watched a cool documentary on YouTube covering the rise and fall of the Leaf game developer. It was a very well-made documentary, and now I know why visual novels are called visual novels in the West. Here’s the link in case you’re curious: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d5GoykMJLYk
THE WORK. And that's about it for today's post. Sorry for all the Suikoden V cringe. It's finally over, I promise. As for work, last week I was still busy writing Irma's bonding events, so I still have no new art assets to show off. Maybe next week. And that's it. Thank you for showing up for this week's Monday Post, and I will see you next Monday. Laterz.
