That Arnold - UNLOCKED | One of Those Summer Evenings I Already Miss
About This Title
Apparently my idea of a romantic getaway is sleeping in a tent for a few days and then making Wendy take photos of me because “LOOK AT THE LIGHT.”
Back in August we escaped to Dénia for a few days and stayed at Camping Los Pinos in Les Rotes.
Highly recommended, by the way.
It’s one of those campsites I really like because it doesn’t feel separated from the place you came there for. You’re basically right there on the rocks. Walk out, cross the road and within a couple of minutes you’re sitting next to the Mediterranean.
No pool complex. No fancy hotel bar. Just towels, rocks, salt water and figuring out where you left your flip flops.
Much more my kind of luxury.
These photos are from our first evening there.
We walked down for sunset and just stayed on the rocks for a while. People were still swimming, an older couple was sitting in their beach chairs reading, a few others had brought drinks, and slowly everything started turning orange.
And then, inevitably:
“Wendy.”
“Wait.”
“Look at this light.”
“Can you take one?”
“One more.”
A photographer never really goes on holiday. His girlfriend just temporarily becomes unpaid staff.
One of the things I love about Les Rotes is that you can actually see both sunrise and sunset there.
Which is frankly dangerous information to give me.
It means there are potentially two moments every single day where Wendy has to hear me announce that the light is amazing as if the sun has never done this before.
Sorry, Leona.
What feels weird now is that this was August.
It genuinely feels like about eleven minutes ago, and somehow we’re already reaching the end of September.
Summer always does that to me. When you’re in the middle of it, it feels endless. Hot days, beach shoots, late sunsets, constantly having sand somewhere it shouldn’t be.
And then suddenly you’re looking back at photos from a month ago and already missing it.
I think these little moments are probably my favourite part of summer anyway.
Not some big luxury trip.
A tent. A campsite next to the rocks. Going for a swim because the sea is right there. Sitting outside until there’s barely any light left.
And occasionally forcing Wendy to photograph me because, once again, LOOK AT THE LIGHT.
I’m not quite ready to let summer go yet.
Although living in this corner of Spain makes the transition slightly less traumatic. Winter here isn’t exactly a punishment either.
Anyone else still mentally somewhere around mid August?
Arnold
