About This Title

— An Inscription Concerning the Luminous Folk, Left by an Unknown Chronicler and Discovered in the Ruins Beneath the Belmorn

Deep within the ruins of Belmorn, there are inscriptions upon the walls unlike any other records found there. Again and again, they depict the figures of small humans.

Much of the record has been damaged, and what they were originally called has never been discovered.

Yet one fact is repeated throughout several passages.

They were human.

Long ago,

[— erased and unreadable]

a new kind of humanity appeared, possessing knowledge and power far greater than theirs.

And so, they had outlived their purpose.

The wizards thought.

And they altered them.

Their bodies were freed from the need to eat and drink. All functions necessary to sustain life were removed.

Only a single purpose remained.

To shine.

They were placed throughout the wizard's tower.

In corridors that required neither torches, candles, nor magical lamps, their bodies gave off a faint, unceasing light.

(And yet, even within the ruins of Belmorn, many candles and torches can still be found burning without end.)

They simply shine.

For hundreds of years. For thousands.

Even after their masters were gone, they continued to cast their light into the darkness.

And yet, it would be wrong to say that they are without intelligence.

They possess a mind of their own.

I recorded seeing the Luminous Folk retreat behind the walls when they noticed me.

They watched unfamiliar visitors from a fixed distance, and only after determining that there was no threat did they slowly approach.

They were wary. They were afraid, They were curious.

And sometimes, they approached first.

Whether they can speak, I do not know.

Yet they seemed to communicate with one another through gestures and movements, changes in the intensity of their light, and faint little sounds.

One question came to my mind.

Do they still remember what they once were?

Do they know what their bodies were made for?

Or, after so very long, do they still remember the age when they were human?

They shine more brightly than any living creature I have ever seen.

And yet, there is nothing beautiful in their light.

If this is what it means to live as something that shines so brightly, then it is a life I would never wish for.
