Enilria - Alaska Soon Announcing Asia Route

About This Title

PATRONS ONLY

We saw that Delta had a pretty uninspiring 2027 Europe announcement. It looks to us like it doesn't even net increase flying, particularly if you lump in the cuts to Hawaii flying (I know not Europe) from Minneapolis (MSP) and Detroit (DTW) and consider the reduction on Atlanta (ATL) to Athens (ATH). I suspect there are more cuts coming, so Europe will likely be down for Delta in 2027. Yet, Delta is taking a lot of new Long-Haul planes, so we know where they are going...Asia.

Alaska also knows this is Delta's new focus, despite their garbage transpacific Wi-Fi. Alaska now says they will announce a new Asia route by the end of the year. My sources say that will be a late October 2027 start using planes pulled seasonally from Europe and backfilled on Summer Europe by new deliveries in 2028. Because of the 330 day selling window there is no point to announcing this until late November at the earliest and they probably want at least a few weeks of inventory to sell, so that would put us at a mid-December announcement before the whole news ecosystem basically shuts down for the Holiday news blackout.

There will be an Asian destination that we will talk about...We will probably be announcing some new things before the calendar year is out. The bias will be to more of Asia in the Pacific than it is to Europe...Asia’s a critical area...If you look at Seattle, it’s the most natural connecting point for the country, with the shortest distance from the middle of the country. It’s also a huge cargo business.

Those are new comments from Alaska's CCO. It makes pretty clear the plan, but what will they add?

There are also rumors that Sydney (SYD) is getting worse and worse, plus partner Qantas is the competition from Honolulu (HNL). I really don't see SYD getting added from Seattle (SEA) because the geography is terrible for connects AND the new comments basically veto that since "if you look at Seattle, it’s the most natural connecting point for the country" definitely does not apply to Australia. Dallas DFW is actually the right geography for Australia. SEA is very poor.

While SYD may or may not survive, I have to think the best option for them is Osaka (KIX) given their JAL relationship, although no doubt JAL probably doesn't want it flown as it will take people off their Tokyo flights. Behind that it is probably Shanghai (PVG) and then Beijing (PEK/PKX) along with Hong Kong (HKG) and Singapore (SIN).
