Dandys Chest - PLUMPSTEAD - Devlog 02
About This Title
Hey Settlers!
(Which, yes, I think that is what I'm going to call you from now on in these posts).
There has been a TON of work behind the scenes lately since I last showed off the little prototype for the new game.
Oh yeah, and you might have noticed that we've finally settled on a name for the game. PLUMPSTEAD was voted on over in the Discord server (which you should totally join if you haven't already), and is now the working title of the project! As I said before, my main goal is to have a playable demo as SOON as possible for y'all to try. My aim is for the prototype to be polished enough to share by next month. As such, I've got a LOT of work to get done in that time, so thank you all for being so patient whilst things have been quiet.
That said, you guys deserve to have some sneakpeeks as to what's being cooked on! So, lemme show off a bit of what's been cooking!
Harvesting & Building!
Here's a (very rough) peek at the actual gameplay. Gathering resources, building structures, etc.
Obviously, the overall goal is to build a colony capable of not only surviving in the wilderness, but thriving in it. In order to do that, you'll need to build shelter, infrastructure, and ways to care for, feed, and take care of your dear colonists!
As you can see, we've got a proper day-night cycle for the game now, and the controls to speed up/pause time in order to better handle tasks at your own pace.
And, of course, you can now stuff your colonists silly :)
Animated Buildings!
I'm slowly starting to get buildings designed and animated! Right now, the game has a black-and-white sketchy style, but I'll polish all the artwork later down the line. This is just temporary whilst I build the actual backbone of the game. It looked prettier than just "gross, basic developer art", so I figured this will do for now.
THE RATS!
Allow me to introduce you to some of the first enemies of the game!
The Rat Queen and her bandits will have base camps all across the world. The more that you attack them or build your colony larger to tempt them, the more they'll try to raid your kingdom as it finds its footing.
There will be a number of different enemy types throughout the game, but the Rats will continue to be one of the more persistent that will return again and again to try to put a halt to your progress and pilfer what you've worked so hard for!
Growing Colonists!
The eating mechanics are mostly done. Leveling up colonists over time will increase their stats like Build Speed, Energy, HP, etc. But in return, their movement speed will decline as they become heavier and heavier the more your colony prospers.
In this way, forward progress is a trade off. Your colonists will unlock new skills and improve their abilities, but they will fit in less buildings, require more infrastructure to move them around efficiently, etc.
And of course, stuff them too full and they'll be too lazy to do much of anything at all...
Anyway, that's about it for now! Hope the progress has been fun to follow so far, and I'll have more updates to share soon! Until then, Settlers!
