Timothy Baldridge - Biggest Update to Wabbajack in Years - and a update on Linux support
About This Title
Wabbajack 4.3.0.0 just went out the door and with it comes a feature I've been working on and planning for some time: The Preflight Check. This new feature is designed to increase the success rate of Wabbajack lists by allowing users to walk through all the prerequisites for a install before starting the rather long installation process. This preflight check started as a way to remove the in-app browser for Wabbajack. The internal browser has long been a pain-point for the app, it limited our ability to port WJ to new platforms, broke often, wasn't compatible with Avalonia (a cross platform UI toolkit we wanted to use), and required users to use a unfamiliar browser. So originally the preflight list was a way to have users be able to walk through the manual downloads of a list, using the system browser. Over time, I decided to fold in more features I wanted to add to Wabbajack. So along came a feature that allows WJ to auto-download your game from Steam if it isn't installed (or if you have the wrong version installed), one that would download Skyrim AE content you own, and even Creation Kit data. The idea is that if the preflight checklist passes, the installation should work flawlessly. Since this new page was being added to the app it made sense to also swap the entire app over to Avalonia, removing the last major barrier to porting Wabbajack to Linux. I'm currently working on getting the full UI up and running on Linux, so that those of us who have moved away from Windows will have a easier time getting our favorite lists running through Proton. During the testing phase of 4.3 I realized that the test coverage of the app was fairly low, so I also added a lot more unit and functionality tests, covering areas of the app that had hereto been only tested by hand, things like uploading collections, and the majority of the Wabbajack compiler code. This gives me more confidence that when I add a feature I'm not breaking a ton of things. If the tests pass in Linux (and they already do) chances are the functionality is correct. I don't need to install 10 modlists by hand to be confident that the system works, I can install just a couple. So not only do these test improve the development cycle for Windows but also for porting to Linux. I want to thank everyone who has continued to support the Wabbajack project. I hope to have a beta build of Linux Wabbajack out in the next week, and I'd love to hear feedback from the community and suggestions. And as always, thank you to all of you who have supported the project through Patreon, your donations keep the lights on, and allow me to run this project without it being a financial burden. If you enjoy the project please consider donating, even one-time donations help with the server costs, and the services (like code signing) that I renew each year.
