About This Title

There's a huge difference between imagining their reaction to you and imagining your actual experience with them.

Whose head you've been living in

Think about the last few scenes you imagined with your person. There's a good chance most of them were about what was going on in their head, like them lying awake thinking about you, realizing what they lost or finally picking up the phone. You were in the scene, sort of, but mostly as the thing they were thinking about.

I find that kind of funny because it's your desire. You're the one who wants this relationship, and somehow your imagination has spent weeks narrating somebody else's inner life while yours barely gets a mention. That's a lot of effort going into the one part of the relationship you'll never actually get to see.

It's easy to see how it happens. Their behavior feels like the proof everyone is waiting for, so your imagination turns into a camera pointed straight at them and just stays there. When proof is what you're looking for, it makes sense to keep watching the person who'd have to provide it.

Why their reactions take over the scene

When you want someone, their response can feel like the entire answer. Do they miss you, do they regret it, are they going to reach out, and every one of those questions is about them. Your own feelings already seem known, so they don't feel worth imagining.

So imagination starts working like a highlight reel of their realizations. Each scene has them having some big moment of clarity and you get to watch it happen from somewhere off to the side. It's dramatic and satisfying for about a minute, and then you need a new epiphany to watch.

Imagining your person thinking about you is completely fine. It's just a very small slice of what you wanted, and it keeps putting you in the audience of your own love story. They're in every scene and you're mostly there to be missed.

What your side of the relationship holds

Your own experience of the relationship has way more in it than their reactions. It has how it feels to be around them on a normal evening, what you talk about in the car and all the little things that stop feeling like a big deal because they're just your life now.

It also has where your attention goes once they're actually part of things. You stop wondering whether they're thinking about you because you're busy making plans for the weekend or laughing about something dumb that happened at work. That shift in where your mind goes is a pretty big part of what having someone feels like.

None of that requires you to know what's happening in their head. It all happens from where you're standing, which is the only place you've ever experienced any relationship from anyway. Your evening with them is something you can step into completely.

The window and the room behind you

A useful way to picture this is someone standing at a window watching another person through the glass. They're paying such close attention to what that person is doing that they never turn around and notice the room behind them, which is where the life they wanted was supposed to happen. It can go on for months without them realizing they've had their back to the whole house.

With Law of Assumption, the scene you keep returning to shows you where you're placing yourself. If you're always at the window, you keep assuming the role of someone who watches from a distance and waits for a reaction. That's a role you'd never pick on purpose if somebody described it to you.

Your person is still in the picture when you turn around. They're in the room with you now, and the scene becomes about what it's like to share it. There's nothing left to watch for because you're already in the night together.

Keeping your person completely specific

Someone might worry that taking the focus off their thoughts makes the desire vague or generic. It gets more specific if anything, because now you're imagining this exact person's laugh, the way they say your name and how they take their coffee. Those details live on your side of things, since you're the one who'd notice them.

Your person stays completely themselves in all of this. The only thing that changes is whose point of view the story gets told from. Their habits, their humor and the way they show affection can all be right there in the scene.

It's also a lot more comfortable to imagine. Scripting someone else's private thoughts can turn into guessing and second-guessing, while living your own side of things just asks you to enjoy being there. One of those wears you out and the other is actually nice to come back to.

A few ways to step back into your own scene

- Take a scene you usually imagine from their side, like them reaching out, and run it from yours. Where are you when the message comes in, what are you doing a minute later and what does the rest of your night look like? Notice how much more there is to it once you're the one living it.

- Pick something small and ordinary to imagine together, like grocery shopping or sitting on the couch scrolling your phones next to each other. Let the whole thing be about how it feels to have them there. Nobody needs to have a realization.

- Catch the scenes where you're watching them think. You don't have to stop them, just notice how often you're the observer and put yourself back in the room the next time you drift off. It gets easier pretty fast because your own side of the scene is honestly more fun to be in.
