Doug Godinho - GD06, Meta thoughts and BO3

Up next Stickyspoodge - All Those Years Later Begins!

About This Title

Hey everyone! A little Sunday update on GD06, the current meta, and something Im getting ready for MSA.

GD06 is already available for New Cards Preview and arrives in ranked next Friday, October 23! In the meantime, Im continuing to fix smaller bugs and check card interactions as reports come in.

Thanks to everyone sharing feedback and game logs they help a lot when tracking down what needs fix.

Bug report thread on Discord

Before we move into GD06, I want to give the current format some appreciation. I’m really enjoying GD05 with the new starter decks. Strike Freedom, rush and MF have a big presence, of course, but I still think there’s plenty to enjoy in the matchups, deckbuilding, and room to experiment.

Allonsyyyy made some points I agree with in his recent video, “So, The Gundam Meta Is CRAZY Right Now?!”. Looking at the Lille Regional, he highlights four different decks in the top four, with only one being Strike Freedom. He also gives credit to the players behind those results, including how much skill it takes to pilot MF consistently through a long tournament.

I share that optimism. Strong decks definitely shape the format, but seeing different strategies succeed and players find smart ways to approach those matchups is a big part of what makes the game fun for me.

My main complain? We barely get any time with this version of the meta! GD05 + new Starters meta gets only four weeks, maybe even less before GD06 joins. Im excited for the new set, of course, but I wish we had a little longer to explore this format. It feels like there are still ideas worth trying, but we are already moving on to the next release.

What comes next for MSA

On the development side, some of you may already have noticed that Im finishing Best of Three + sideboards.

BO3 will be optional, with its own dedicated ranked queue, each player will have bit less per game time and action time window. The objective here is to train for faster decisions as the format requires. Not confident with the game or with the deck? Ranked without BO3 and Casual queues should be your go-to first!

BO3 match wins will award extra ranked points, while losses won’t carry an additional BO3 penalty. The idea is to reward the extra time these matches take without making a loss more punishing than in the regular queue.

This is also part of the thinking behind the upcoming changes to ranked progression. As I explained in my Friday Updates and Upcoming Ranked Changes post, next season will give consistent results a little more weight while continuing to reward participation, practice, and experimentation.

Thanks for playing, helping me improve MSA, and sharing your ideas. I’m excited to see what everyone brings into GD06!
