Translator-Sama - Chapter 49: Goddess of Dawn, the Sun Shield

infoAbout This Title

Even with the Gauntlet of Zeus coming up later, although these artifacts couldn't be permanently kept, siphoning a bit of divine energy from them wouldn't be a problem at all. After all, lending them to Kratos drained their power anyway. Stealing just a fraction would be more than enough.

Both artifacts and the Primordial Fire were incredible treasures. The Olympians would eventually reclaim them, so Axis couldn't let this opportunity slip by.

The duo pressed deeper into the Temple of Helios. Monsters born from the darkness constantly spawned to block their path. Undead warriors, harpies, gorgons, minotaurs, and cyclopes launched relentless attacks.

However, they posed little threat and were easily dispatched. Axis's fire abilities were no joke now. Ordinary monsters were absolutely no match for him, especially with the formidable Spartan fighting by his side.

They pushed forward, solving numerous mechanical puzzles. As they stepped into the center of a collapsed sanctuary, a massive statue of a goddess suddenly radiated a brilliant white light. A deity had possessed it.

"I am so grateful you have come, Ghost of Sparta. And you, brave hero. You must save my brother."

'Excellent, the main quest NPC has arrived,' Axis thought. It was Eos, the Goddess of Dawn and sister to the Sun God.

"Goddess of Dawn?" Kratos recognized the divine presence immediately.

"Greetings, Goddess of Dawn," Axis offered a slight bow.

"My brother, Helios, has been abducted by the Titan Atlas," Eos pleaded. "He intends to use my brother's power to destroy the world. Please, you must rescue him."

"What does Atlas want with the Sun God?" Kratos demanded.

"Helios wields the power of the sun. It is an overwhelming force, easily capable of annihilating this world. He must not fall into the hands of the Titans."

"What must we do? How do we rescue him?" Kratos asked.

"My brother's Sun Shield remains within this temple. Find it, then seek me out on the far side of the Olympus cave entrance. I will guide your next steps. You must hurry. Every minute you delay, my brother suffers further torment at the hands of the Titans."

The white light faded, and Eos vanished. Simultaneously, a heavy set of previously sealed doors slowly ground open, revealing the path Eos had prepared.

"Just as you predicted, Axis. What is our next move?" Kratos asked.

"We secure the Sun Shield, then meet Eos. She is waiting for us ahead."

"Very well."

Following the goddess's guidance, they entered a hidden chamber. A golden, circular shield rested upon a massive stone throne. It radiated an intense wave of heat, burning like a miniature sun. This was the Sun Shield.

Kratos stepped forward and smashed the throne with the Blades of Chaos. The stone shattered, and the circular shield floated gently into the Spartan's grasp.

"Do you want this, Axis?" Kratos offered, holding out the relic.

"No, neither of us can keep it. We have to return it to Helios once this is over. We can only borrow it."

It was a genuine divine artifact. Though Axis was incredibly tempted, he didn't dare steal it outright.

"Very well, I will hold onto it," Kratos grunted.

"Wait, let me touch it. I want to siphon a bit of its divine energy. Not much, just a fraction."

"Go ahead."

Kratos presented the shield, and Axis slowly placed his hand flat against the golden metal. An incredibly searing heat instantly surged into his body.

[Powerful divine energy detected. Absorption available.]

Axis didn't hesitate to absorb the solar energy, though he carefully restricted himself. He drained just enough to slightly dim the shield's radiant luster. Pulling back after taking roughly a tenth of its power, he felt the small fraction drastically enhance his abilities.

"Alright, let's keep moving," Axis said.

This influx of divine energy didn't grant him an additional multiversal jump. Instead, Axis integrated the power directly into his Devil Fruit. His pyrokinesis evolved once more. The flames burned significantly hotter and possessed far greater destructive potential. Furthermore, they gained the divine properties of the sun, capable of banishing darkness and suppressing evil. Axis could now activate his Firestorm mode and illuminate the sky like a literal miniature sun.

"Is that enough?" Kratos checked.

"More than enough. Let's go. You keep the Sun Shield; it will be crucial against the enemies ahead."

Kratos nodded. They pressed forward, following Eos's path. After navigating a labyrinth of mechanical traps and slaughtering countless dark creatures, they finally reached the goddess's physical location.

Eos sat upon a raised altar, bare-chested, radiating a faint golden aura. Deprived of the sun's light, she appeared visibly weakened.

'Good lord, the Greek goddesses certainly know how to dress,' Axis thought, appreciating the view of her boobs.

"All glory to Zeus in the Olympus. I will guide you on a safe path," Eos stated.

"The King of the Gods has never aided me, Goddess of Dawn. I am nothing but a slave to Zeus and Olympus," Kratos grunted. But as long as Axis kept his promise, this servitude was only temporary.

"Trust me, Kratos and Axis," Eos urged. "If you rescue my brother, he will personally petition Zeus on your behalf. You will both be heavily rewarded. Trust me, I am willing to forge a pact with you."

"I have made enough pacts with the Olympians. Just tell me how to rescue your brother," Kratos demanded.

"The Primordial Fire is fading. Without the glory of the Sun God, nothing in this world can survive. You must find the Primordial Fire. If you fail, we will all plunge into eternal darkness and death."

"Goddess, we are merely mortal," Axis interjected. "Could you perhaps bestow some divine power upon us so we can better rescue your brother?"

"I apologize, but I am only the Goddess of Dawn. I cannot help you. Besides, you have already secured my brother's Sun Shield; it will aid you. Now go. Find my brother and bring him back."

With that, Eos closed her eyes and fell completely silent.

'Damn it!' Axis cursed internally. 'Another one who expects the horse to run without feeding it. How completely useless!'
