About This Title
“The Swan of Tuonela” is an orchestral piece by the Finnish composer Jean Sibelius. He wrote it in 1895 as part of a suite inspired by the Kalevala, Finland’s great national epic.
In Finnish mythology, Tuonela is the realm of the dead, separated from the world of the living by a dark river. A sacred swan glides across its waters. Sibelius gives the swan its voice through the English horn, whose deep, haunting tone carries the melody while the strings create a slow, dreamlike atmosphere.
The story behind the piece tells of the hero Lemminkäinen, who is sent to kill the swan as part of a trial. Yet the music feels less like an action scene than a spellbound glimpse of the bird from the riverbank: solemn, mysterious and almost outside of time.
