About This Title

A rougarou (also known as the loup garou, a wolf shape shifter) is a part of Cajun folklore. Half tragic figure torn between man and animal, half ecological and cultural hero, the rougarou has been embraced by Cajuns as a mascot and an alter ego- a chance to revisit the past and let your wild side out.

Yall know I've added a few Louisiana festivals to my series of Louisiana food illustrations, and of course, I had to add Houma's Rougarou Fest to the series. A festival of cryptids and costumes, celebrating Houma's diverse cultural heritage from the Houmas Indians to Cajuns, you can find all sorts of surprises at the Rougarou Festival. And since this festival partners with Louisiana artists for their posters, I figured it was worth it to show I'm willing, in my own uniquely Becca way.

This watercolor illustration combines so many things I love- A tiny little rougarou in her wolf costume terrorizes the swamp under a full harvest moon.

Ok, at 7" tall, terrorize isn't exactly the right word.

Let's call this fanart, because it's definitely not official, but as a Rougarou Festival enjoyer, I really wanted to try doing a poster that fits in with my Louisiana Food series. And maybe someday, the Rougarou Fest will come calling and let me do a baby-garou poster for the young at heart.

The design was heavily inspired by Where the Wild Things Are, because who wasn't inspired by Maurice Sendak?

Close ups from my faux festival poster. And now, let the wild rumpus start!

Fireflies dancing. A cozy wolf kigu. Cypress knees in the swamp. And a huge harvest moon. All make for a uniquely Louisiana kind of Halloween magic.

I have video footage for this illustration AND written painting notes, so when I recover from being sick, I'll try to get a walk through video out to my wonderful Patrons.

When the food is so good you feel like dancing, and despite being sick with the ick, yesterday I felt like dancing.

We went to the Rougarou Fest yesterday and had turtle soup and blackberry dumplings, listened to rougarou lore and my husband learned how to mend a net. We bought art from local artists and visited with friends.

A Cypress pirougue with hand carved Paddle. In the folklife tent, a woodcarver demonstrated his craft.

A giant heron guards the entrance to the festivities.

Rougarou Fest has so many artists and makers! You can find homemade treats and soaps, lots of art and handmade goods, both at the festival and RouGaCon, the one day nerd con.

And of course, it wouldn't be a trip to Houma without stopping by the Scarlet Scoop for a shake!

I've been sick for over a week and have been feeling run down, so I have no idea what I'll be able to accomplish this week!

I recently wrapped up video footage for the Craftamo and Ohuhu Advent Calendars, but need to edit and do voice over (which is just not feasible right now, I have no projection to my voice).

Tuesday I'm sharing a Fuumuui Creamora opaque watercolor review, and I'm packing up acrylic ornaments to send to Cocodrie Collective for consignment.

On Friday, I have a little pop up scheduled right outside Miette on Magazine, so cross your fingers that I recover by then!

I SHOULD be going over my new website with a fine tooth comb for the relaunch, but staring at a computer screen gives me a headache right now, and I'm updating my Patreon blog from my phone in a dark room, so seriously, send some hopes, vibes, and prayers my way that I recover soon because working artist doesn't come with sick leave.
