Louise De Masi - Artist Spotlight - Peiying
About This Title
Hi everyone,
Thank you to all who took part in October’s painting challenge. Painting shiny metal in watercolour isn’t easy, and I was pleased to see so many of you having a go at this difficult subject. Some of you even painted it more than once, which was lovely to see!
There were some beautiful paintings submitted this month, and choosing just one for the Artist Spotlight was difficult. I loved seeing the different approaches to the reflections. Some of you used strong contrasts between light and dark to create that polished appearance, while others introduced blues, violets and warm earthy colours into the metal. There were some beautifully observed highlights and some really lovely watercolour handling throughout.
I wish I had time to talk about every painting individually because there were so many things I liked about your work. Each of you approached the subject a little differently, and there was something to appreciate in every painting. Choosing just one is never easy, and I hope you know how much I enjoy seeing what you create.
This month’s Artist Spotlight goes to Peiying!
What particularly caught my eye about Peiying’s painting was the beautiful control of values and the soft transitions between light and dark. The metallic surfaces are convincing without looking harsh or overworked.
I especially like the way the edges along the cutlery handles have been handled. Some are clearly defined, while others soften and almost disappear into the surrounding paper. These subtle lost and found edges help give the handles their rounded form.
The little touches of warmth in the reflections are lovely too. Those hints of orange and brown amongst the cooler greys add interest and make the metal look more natural.
I also love the soft, diffused highlight in the bowl of the spoon and the way it gradually transitions into the darker surrounding values.
There’s a real confidence in the way this painting has been approached and I think that’s one of the things that makes this painting so successful.
Congratulations, Peiying! A beautiful painting and a very well-deserved Artist Spotlight.
To everyone else who participated, thank you! I really enjoyed looking through all your paintings. Remember, these challenges aren’t about producing a perfect painting. They’re an opportunity to make your own decisions, experiment with techniques and put what you’ve been learning into practice.
I hope you enjoyed the challenge, and I’m looking forward to seeing what you create next month!
