Gillpanda - My Journey Into 3D Animation! A Little Test and Some Big Plans!
About This Title
Okay, guys! So, I spent almost the entire day making this rotating 3D text as a little test. LOL! It kinda worked! I'm still figuring things out, but I really wanted to try something, even if it was as small as rotating text. Had to Google a LOT of stuff, though, that's for damn sure! XD
But anyway! I've been very interested in getting into 3D animation for quite a while now. I know it's going to take some time to build all the assets I need, but I really want to try making more stuff for you guys! After making some 2D animations, I started realizing just how much you guys enjoy seeing animated content from me. And that really got me thinking about what else I could accomplish.
So, if you guys are willing to give me some time and be patient with me, I want to do my best to learn as much as I can and eventually produce some 3D animations! One of the biggest reasons I've been interested in 3D animation is the sheer number of possibilities it offers. I sadly don't have a team helping me make comics or animations, so I have to figure out how to accomplish these things on my own. But I know there are ways to make this stuff as a solo artist! Short clips, animation loops, maybe something cute for the holidays! There's so much I could try! And yes, I know a good chunk of you would probably love to see some NSFW animations, too! But I don't know just yet. I'm still trying to figure everything out, you know?
I have SO many ideas I want to experiment with! I know I'll be starting with small, basic stuff. Simple walk cycles, running animations, and maybe eventually some action scenes! I also REALLY want to make some short, story-driven animations with voice acting! Or heck, maybe even animate some memes we've all seen before! As long as I can start producing some simple loops and other little animations, I'll be happy knowing I'm making progress.
Now, here's something I'm REALLY interested in: the visual style!
I genuinely believe 3D animation could become a great time-saver for me in the long run, especially once I've built my models and rigs. But when it comes to rendering, I want to aim for something called NPR (Non-Photorealistic Rendering). Basically, I want to capture that beautiful hand-drawn look while still taking advantage of 3D animation! Think of games like Guilty Gear or Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls. That wonderful mixture of 2D aesthetics and 3D models!
Of course, I might experiment with stronger shadows, some gradients here and there, and other little details to make everything look nice. Or HECK! Maybe I'll keep things simple, like how I handled the coloring in my old Red Chair comics or those flat-ish colored Red Equinox comics from back in the day! OOOOH!! OR I COULD DO A NICE, SOFT-SHADED LOOK!! AAAAAH!! IDEAS!!! XD
Okay, I think I'm just dumping my thoughts at this point. LOL! But seriously, I want to be able to do the kinds of things I've seen other artists in this community accomplish. Just casually making some dope-ass 3D animated projects and bringing their characters to life! And I hate that feeling of looking at something amazing and wondering if I'll ever be capable of doing it myself.
I'm not a programmer, nor do I have some fancy four-year college education in animation or 3D modeling. A LOT of what I've learned over the years has come from the internet, experimenting, making mistakes, and figuring things out as I go. But I still want to make REALLY good stuff! So, I guess what I'm asking is... please be patient with me while I learn. I genuinely want to understand 3D animation, rendering, and everything else that comes with it, so that one day I can make something that'll blow your minds!
And then there's the rigging! OH BOY!
That's going to be another major step in this journey. I already have a few ideas about how I want to approach rigging my models, especially when it comes to getting all those tiny little details and movements I want. And who knows? My ideas for NPR might change as I learn more. Maybe I won't end up with something that looks completely hand-drawn. If that's the case, I could always aim for a beautiful, soft cel-shaded appearance instead! I'll figure it out!
One thing I'm particularly excited about is finally making a more accurate 3D model of myself! I have some ideas about how I want my panda body to look, especially when it comes to capturing my proper semi-feral bear proportions. I want to maintain that natural, bear-like anatomy while still keeping all my curves! And because I'm also a quadruped who can stand upright, I'll have to figure out how to make both forms of movement work naturally with the rig. Walking on all fours, standing upright, transitioning between the two... that's going to be an interesting challenge!
And then there's my rodent self. That's going to be a task and a half! LOL! I'll need to figure out how to make that form work properly outside of VRChat. One of the limitations of VRChat avatars is that you sometimes have to design things around a human body, which can make certain character proportions and movements tricky. With a model made specifically for animation, though, I could have a lot more freedom to make everything look and move the way I actually envision it! Just thinking about those possibilities gets me excited!
But for now, I have some other priorities to take care of!
I still need to earn some money for MFF, and I also have commissions that I've recently opened up. Those are going to need my attention, so I won't be diving headfirst into all of this immediately. But I absolutely want to keep learning and experimenting whenever I have the opportunity! I really hope you guys can imagine the possibilities that learning these skills could bring to my work. There's so much I want to create, and being able to animate myself and other characters in 3D could open up an entirely new world for me!
Anyway, thank you guys so much for reading through all my rambling! LOL! And seriously, thank you for supporting my work and giving me the opportunity to keep learning new things. Wish me luck! (I'm gonna need it....)
I'll try to share whatever progress I make in the WIP channel on my Discord, or maybe I'll start posting some of those experiments here on Patreon instead! Either way, I hope you'll enjoy watching me figure all this stuff out!
Thank you guys again!
