About This Title

"I hope it will continue running forever in everyone's hearts..."

—Leiji Matsumoto

“Galaxy Express 999" is a work in which I entrusted my own youth to Tetsuro Hoshino, but I want this to be the last. In the past, I had to abruptly end a work I loved, even though I had regrets, but looking back now, I'm glad I did. Just because you love something doesn't mean you should drag it out too long; it becomes drawn-out and bland. "Galaxy Express 999" is a work I really love. That's precisely why I want to say goodbye cleanly here. In the previous work, the theme was "A Boy's Journey," where the boy Tetsuro Hoshino, along with the mysterious beauty Maetel, embarks on a journey through space and learns the preciousness of life because it is short. This work, too, has "a hymn to finite life" as its main theme, which runs through the entire story of "999," but it depicts Tetsuro's growth from boy to man. Time passes, and Tetsuro once again boards the Galaxy Express 999 to travel through space in order to save Earth from being occupied by cyborgs. He reunites with Maetel and battles the cyborg army... While the previous film left the problems of the Machine Empire unresolved, this time the true nature of the Machine Empire is revealed. And so is the true identity of the mysterious beauty, Maetel... I believe the story has reached a kind of conclusion.

As with the previous film, hundreds of staff members collaborated to create excellent visuals. It is the culmination of the blood, sweat, and tears of many. Under fortunate circumstances, and while I was still healthy, I feel truly fortunate to have been able to complete "Galaxy Express 999," a project into which I entrusted my youthful dreams.

As I put down my pen on "999," I am filled with deep emotion, but also with sadness at parting. The thought of saying goodbye to Maetel makes me very lonely. For me, saying goodbye to "999" is nothing less than saying goodbye to Maetel.

With this, '999' will disappear from the screen. However, I want to believe that '999' will live on in the hearts of all the fans, continuing to run through the hearts of many people. As I mentioned earlier, the main theme of 'Galaxy Express 999' is 'A hymn to finite life.' Like the flow of life from parent to child, and from child to grandchild, I hope that this train will continue to be talked about and run forever. If '999' continues to run forever in your hearts, there would be no greater happiness for me as its creator. It's sad, but since it's a work that depicts dreams and hope, I want to say goodbye with hope and dreams.
