These cups are a favorite of tricksters, illusionists, and gamblers. They're made of a soft porcelain with a pleasing blue pattern, and they typically come in sets of four.
While holding one of the cups, you can speak its command word to cause the cup you're holding to magically switch places with another one that you can see, provided it's within 10 feet of you. The cups switch instantly, including anything contained within them. A creature can detect the switch with a successful DC 15 Wisdom (Perception) check. Other differences in the cups, such as what's contained within, may make it more obvious that there was a switch. Once two cups have been switched, neither of those cups can be switched again until the next dawn.
The cups' command word is unique in that it's an extremely common word (typically "Well," "Good," or "See" in Common) but only activates if the holder is also gently tapping the cup (such as conversationally or thoughtfully).
The last line of the invitation stung Jastin the most. 'Just a meal between old friends.'
The Archmage Madro—a wretch of a man—of course glossed over the constant inspection of each piece of food or drink he had. Even after years of correspondence, he refused to trust the gifts she sent. It had been hell to coax him out of his tower in the first place, so she tried not to take offense and be glad for the invitation. Especially since he was right about her, after all.
The dinner was flavorless and had blander conversation. Madro had ruined dozens of conversations through the evening with mumbled spells and incantations to test for every poison he knew. Madro's closing toast had turned into a practical speech, and as Madro raised his cup to his lips, she concurred, "To good memories shared."
After all, he'd never once checked her cup. And it was his fault she had so few good memories to share.
