Transport Evolved - EV Fast Charging Prices Have Soared Since 2022. Here's Why
infoAbout This Title
[Editorial note]
Hi everyone! Nikki here. I'm afraid we're on the road right now, and so the Patreon post didn't go live when intended. I hope you'll forgive us for this little error! - Nikki
We're no strangers to long-distance EV travel on the channel. Over the past 20 years of EV ownership, we've driven the length and breadth of the UK. We've gone coast-to-coast in the U.S., and sometimes, we've even towed.
But one thing we - as many of you - are noticing is that the cost to fast charge is substantially more than it once was. And on our way down to the San Francisco Bay Area to attend a press event, we saw first hand what that looks like.
$41.68 for 100 kWh. On our latest I-5 road trip in the F-150 Lightning, fast charging cost two and a half to three times what a full charge at home does - and Electrify America's price has jumped from 43¢ per kWh in 2022 to as much as 69¢ today.
So today, we're examining why those changes have happened. Yes, electricity is more expensive than it used to be, but hardware upgrades, ground rent, and in the U.S., vanishing incentives are all fighting to make your next long-distance EV trip more expensive.
Watch on YouTube — or if you'd prefer (we would), PeerTube.
