Magik edges out Jubilee and Squirrel Girl in this month's Discord poll! In the reference images for the poll I used Marvel Rivals designs, but during the sketching process I found myself leaning toward her Marvel Tokon look. Perhaps because as a costume it comes apart easier than her Rivals suit. Or maybe because good lord, Tokon Magik was my entire social media feed over the weekend. The fact that her thighs jiggle when she high-kicks really set the internet on fire.
So I only ever recall reading one comic that Magik was in, but it sure left an impression on me. When I was a kid I got a box of random X-men comics for Christmas and I swear I have all fifty or so of those particular issues burned into my brain for life. In one such comic, Magik, or Illyana Rasputin, was not an ass kicking teleporting sword fighter. She was a small child dying of a disease that was targeting mutants. It was a whole issue about a little girl dying and it was the most depressing shit I ever read in my life at the time.
The comic implied that Illyana was an adult that had been turned into a child somehow but still, very grim stuff. Some years later I picked up a new issue and saw that the sword fighter with the crown headpiece was a very alive Illyana and no joke, a tiny childhood trauma instantly healed within me. XD
And that's the extent of my knowledge! The Tokon trailers made her seem like a bit of a diva (which I love) so I applied some attitude here. I did wonder not only how Magik got turned into a kid, but also how she resurrected as an adult. And you know what? I somehow never looked it up. So if anyone wants to fill me in I'll leave that door open in the comments here. Hope you guys like the pin up!
