Hello fellow translators,
I have released Translator++ 8.8.8 a little earlier than usual, with two important changes that I am very happy to share. If you saw the release info a few days ago, you might have noticed that this broke my usual Wednesday release schedule.
I decided to release it early because if I released it on Saturday the 8th, the version number would become 8.8.8.
That was simply too neat to skip. (ᵕ⸝⸝• ᴗ •)
So, yes, this release is partly driven by a practical feature update—and partly by my inability to resist a satisfying version number. (˶˃ ᵕ ˂˶)
OpenRouter Batch API support
Translator++'s LLM Batch API now supports OpenRouter.
OpenRouter provides access to a large collection of language models through one standardized API. With this update, Translator++ can use OpenRouter’s Batch API to translate with virtually any LLM that OpenRouter makes available for batch processing.
That includes models from many different providers, all accessible through the same Translator++ workflow. You can choose the model you want, submit your translation project as a batch, and let it process in the background.
The biggest advantage is the price: Batch API requests are generally available at a 50% discount compared with regular requests. This makes large translation projects much more affordable, especially when immediate results are not required.
The existing batch manager continues to let you:
Monitor submitted batches
Check progress and status
Review the original prompts and returned responses
Inspect individual translation items
Apply completed translations back into your project
This effectively gives Translator++ access to a very broad range of LLM translation options while keeping the workflow familiar.
OpenAI API Add-on is now free
The TransChatGPT / OpenAI API translation support is now free and built into Translator++.
When I first added OpenAI translation support, the situation was very different. OpenAI’s API was still relatively new, and using an LLM for game translation felt like an experimental feature. I am fairly sure Translator++ was one of the first CAT tools to support OpenAI-based translation at that time.
There have been many trials, experiments, rewrites, and changes since then. The technology has matured considerably, and OpenAI-compatible APIs have become a widely adopted standard. Today, the API is stable enough that the cost of maintaining and developing this integration has dropped dramatically.
Because of that, I’ve actually been thinking about making this a free, built-in add-on for quite some time now. Releasing version 8.8.8 just felt like the absolute best timing to finally pull the trigger and do it.
Starting from version 8.8.8 OpenAI support will be built in into Translator++.
Looking forward
I have always tried to keep Translator++ close to the latest useful technology for game translation. Sometimes that means experimenting early, sometimes it means rewriting older features, and sometimes it means waiting until an emerging standard becomes stable enough to use reliably.
The OpenRouter Batch API support is another step in that direction. It gives translators more choice, makes large projects less expensive, and lets Translator++ benefit from the rapid development happening across the LLM ecosystem.
