infoAbout This Title
Hi all,
A little earlier than usual, time for a very short monthly update (lol, I kid. This one gonna be long as fuck).
Chapter 10 Progress Report:
Just a short progress report on this as I only put the public one out like a week ago and things won’t have changed much. I'm just smashing through the post work as best I can.
Current render count: 2345 (It dropped one, I found a duplicate)
Tasks remaining:
Post-work: 69% (teehee) complete
Additional lewd writing: 50% complete
Music/Audio: Further music selected/acquired (and a few original songs delivered) – music/sfx not yet coded into game.
Additional: Still need to implement all new special renders and lewd scenes into the galleries.
Testing: Obviously, not done yet.
As you can see by the preview image of something I was considering holding back until we’re in game, we’re visiting Riley in the club this chapter. And boy, post working those scenes is taking me 5 times longer than any other scene.
Steam Report:
It seems like we’re doing well, though a small part of me is sad about how much sales dropped since that first day of release where I spent the whole day going “OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD”. I was an idiot to think that would keep going for a while to come. But still, very happy. I won’t be paying my mortgage off just yet, but I’m feeling comfortable in my decision to full-time dev. Still only at 9.5% Wishlist conversion rate right now though.
Reviews, however, have been great. Both the content of them, and the number. We hit 100 reviews within about a week which by all reports is incredible. And we are currently straddling around 94-95% positive. I never expected to reach an “Overwhelmingly Positive” score on Steam, but now it could very well be a possibility. Just need another 400 or so positive reviews first.
And now, onto a short novella that will make up the bulk of this blog…
“Unwavering; Tales of The Rabid Few & The Stubborn Dev” by JDOR
This is something that will be half rant/vent and half warning. I have disclosed some of this in the past but I’m going to be as clear as I possibly can be while also avoiding spoilers as much as I can. So, it may appear vague and for that, I apologise.
It is somewhat inspired by the very image that accompanies this month’s blog, because in the past, “NTR!” has been screamed at the fact that Riley is a stripper. She's been called a slut because of it, and that she's probably sucking a whole lot of dicks in the club. And after you see what is coming, I know I'm going to get a whole lot more of that.
When I first wrote the initial script for Origin Story, I had only played a few VNs at the time, and the extent of my involvement with them was extremely limited. I simply sought a few out, downloaded them and played them. I had zero involvement in the AVN community. I didn’t know anyone else who played them. I didn’t use discord. I didn’t trawl the F site and read their forums. Literally nothing.
When I decided to try my own hand it, I had no idea what the community liked or didn’t like. So, when I wrote the script, specifically the lewd stuff within it, I simply wrote what I found hot myself.
I had never heard of the term NTR. I didn’t know there was such a vocal group of people against it. And I didn’t know just how blurred the lines are between what is and isn’t NTR. In the early days, when I first released my demo, someone warned me that it might ruffle a few feathers as the anti-NTR crowd were a little prickly, and I shrugged it off with a “huh, whatever”, because I didn’t know just how rabid they could be.
So, to say I was surprised by the amount of backlash certain parts of the game got (you know the ones), is an understatement. And while the game was, and still is, mostly well-received and the negativity primarily came from a vocal few, I can’t deny that it shook me up a little back then.
Over the past few years, my skin has significantly thickened, and these days I mostly laugh it off when I see the rabid comments. But still, I know that this vocal group have affected the number of people willing to try Origin Story somewhat, even if it's only a little.
I still see comments from people outright refusing to play it because of all the NTR they heard about, or asking “is it worth checking out because I heard the dev shoves a lot of cuck shit into it?” (literally something I read the other day somewhat verbatim – to which twenty people replied with “there’s no cuck shit”). To this day I still laugh about that one guy who went across a whole bunch of the more public AVN websites under different aliases to try and convince people it was jam-packed with gay content just so that they would avoid it.
I’ve even had messages that I was “pathetic” for spending all day deleting comments from people criticising the NTR in the game (I’ve deleted about 4 from my Itch page in 3 years - hardly all day long, and I banned them because what they were saying was completely false and because they were seriously abusive while saying it). What’s more pathetic is that they know I did that? Do they have a meeting place online where they all congregate and discuss what games or developers they’re mad about this time?"Oh that JDOR guy deleted my comment!""Me too!""Quick let's go and spend the valuable time out of our lives trawling the internet to tell people bullshit about him and his game!""We could tell them it's full of dudes fucking each other and there are no female LIs!""Right on!"The mind boggles.
Anyway, you guys have played it. You know exactly what content is in this game so far, so you can understand how exhausting it gets seeing this shit at times. While I have mostly moved past it and don’t let it faze me, I still sometimes want to bang my head against the wall at the sheer stupidity of it.
This week, I saw a comment stating that this “pathetic clown dev” had rewritten the entire game and altered the story just to include that Chapter 9 vision of the future as a mockery of anti-NTR people. I’ve already seen a few people theorize that is what I was going for with that whole sequence, and I’ve allowed them to think that way because mostly people found that idea funny, and I found it funny that people believed that. But this was the first time I had seen it said with such vitriol.
So, I’m going to be clear about something. No, that scene I wrote a whole two years before I even knew what NTR was, is not intended to make fun of the people who dislike it. It’s just a vision of a guy who has gone mad with power and has decided to take all the women for himself. Nothing more, nothing less.
If anything, you could say it’s a mockery of harem fans at a stretch. And harem fans do not equal anti-NTR fans.
Sure, I have shoe-horned in some meta jokes at their expense from time to time, and maybe a few times too many, but change entire storylines? Things the whole concept of game going forward are hinged upon? Get real.
I will never add significant plotlines to my story to just appease some people or make fun of another. And the same goes for anyone who tries to push me to include any type of specific content that I haven’t already planned out, regardless of what side of the NTR fence it falls on.
But the thing is, that goes both ways. I have stuff planned in the future that I have been fretting over including ever since first witnessing the ire that Parker’s bathroom rendezvous, what Evelyn gets up to her in sleep or Anthony’s touch power caused. There are some things, that will even make the stans think “actually those things we got mad about weren’t that bad compared to this”.
There are things that I haven’t even told any of the people closest to me and the game about, because I was terrified that if I tell them, and then ended up removing them to avoid any backlash, they’d think less of me for going against what I’ve always envisioned and wanted out of this game.
It is stuff that I’m sure I’ll be accused of including purely to piss off the brigade further, even though I literally included the Safe Mode Warning Screen to warn players of them three years ago. You know, the “may upset you if you are prone to taking offense to the sight of women being remotely sexual with others (and not always with the intent for sexual gratification)” and the “this is a world in which superpowers exist (shapeshifters, illusionists, hypnotists) – these scenes may not aways be what they seem)”. And there are ideas I have had that may not have been adequately advertised back then because my AVN preferences have changed since this whole thing began. The Anna/Arwen/Evelyn 4some scene along with its absence of a potential sharing/swinging warning or tag being one of them. And I'm afraid to admit that, at times, I have occasionally been tempted by that thought of removing them entirely just to save myself the hassle.
However, there are games, much more successful than mine, that include things far worse than what Origin Story has included so far, and, proportionately to the number of fans they have, they don’t seem to get anywhere near as much anti-NTR hate as I get. At least as far as I can tell. Spoilers for some of them games coming up so that we can compare just how small fry some of the stuff people get upset about with OS is:
Desert Stalker [SPOILER WARNING] has many scenes that you expect would upset some, but there is literally has a scene where you can end the game by making the wrong choice and have the MC killed, forcing one of the favorite girls in the game to be beheaded, dismembered and left in a pile of neatly stacked body parts, while another - and arguably the most popular love interest in the game - is being mouth-fucked by her captor in the other room. She is then forced into servitude by being repeatedly fucked over and over again for months, literally ending with a final shot of her being sold as a slave and roughly ass fucked. It is pretty fucked up. And it’s one of the most popular Daz-AVNs on Steam!
Being a DiK [SPOILER WARNING] has a scene early on in which three girls have to make three different guys cum inside them (with a condom… and then the guys have to eat the condom). All three girls become fuckable throughout the game and one of the ones who serves the other guys grows to be arguably one of the most loved side girls ever in any AVN (in part due to the nature of that games’ popularity). And she moonlights as one of Quinn’s whores off-screen too! And that one is THE most popular Daz-AVN on steam.
Pale Carnations [SPOILER WARNING] has a scene where one of the carnations has to endure a bukkake whether you like it or not. The only choice you have is who's the one that's going to be drenched in cum and money by the end of it. And we won't even go into the crazy shit that goes down in the update that recently dropped. And people with very twisted minds love that game! Including me!
Our Red String [SPOILER WARNING], which is also very successful and respected, has a certain path where a very sweet and innocent (and again most people’s favorite) love interest while being slowly corrupted suddenly has her sluttification amped up to 11 and ends up sucking seven dicks in a glory hole over the course of an evening.
I could go on.
My point is... many of those things from those games are a thousand times worse than what I had planned and some of them aren’t even optional. If those developers can make the game they want to make, including content much worse than mine, and be very successful doing it, without letting some small discourse from a vocal minority get to them, why am I allowing it to make me hesitate?
Why am I considering compromising my artistic integrity by not including stuff that I’m worried people will scream “NTR!” at me for, when it’s already being screamed at me anyway? What’s the point?
So, I am going to stick to my guns and do the game, as I want to. I refuse to let my vision be compromised by a vocal few or by my own anxieties about pleasing everyone. I refuse to deny you the upcoming scene of Riley at the strip club just because showing her tits and pussy to a crowd of men might upset someone. I refuse to remove a glimpse of a prostitute sucking someone off in the alleyway because someone might get their panties in a bunch about it. And I refuse to hold back some of the much wilder stuff coming later.
I’m going to make a game that I personally would find hot. If the things that I find hot change over time, so too might the things I want to include.
So, what I’m saying is, in the future, unless you’ve got safe mode turned on, be prepared for scenes that may not be for you. Be prepared for more scenes that the rabid few will scream “NTR” at even more than they have already. Be prepared to occasionally see another dick. And be prepared for Fraser.
Though these scenes will still no doubt get called NTR or "cuck shit", they are not. I do not like NTR or cuckolding content at all… well, being on the receiving end of it anyway.
I do, however, enjoy something that often gets labelled as NTR in swinging/sharing content (as evident by the aforementioned Anna/Arwen/Evelyn 4some), and I won’t be made to feel ashamed of it. And so, we are clear, I’m not saying Origin Story is going to suddenly become a sharing game - although yes, there could be some of that with the right girls for it.
I’ve also grown to enjoy seeing love interests occasionally defiled and debased, because I’m the kind of twisted fuck that the aforementioned bad ending for Desert Stalker, or the more twisted corruption paths in Photo Hunt, was made for, and I’ve been holding my inner kink back somewhat. So yes, there is the possibility that you may think a certain (completely optional) scene was too much for you.
But the core of my story will always remain as it always has: a silly superhero story with wholesome, silly and often emotional moments and loveable but flawed characters. Shit will sometimes get serious. And sometimes it will break into an unapologetically horny fuck fest. And sometimes it may push boundaries not yet pushed within Origin Story, but always with yours (and the MCs) express permission.
And if you’re still here, after all those things I’ve already included that angered the rabid few, then none of it is likely going to upset you anyway.
But know that I will always give you the option to avoid everything that may upset you with safe mode. Hell, even with Safe Mode off, I will be giving you an “are you that you are sure that you want to see this?” for some of it, just as I did with Parker’s bathroom fun.
I’m sure there may be a few of you who may be sceptical about this. But I hope the majority of you are reasonable and understand that in the grand scheme of the game, it is only small percentage of content. And it will all be optional, so you don’t have to get mad about something you are not being forced to see. But no doubt, some will be mad regardless, because that is the nature of the AVN landscape and there’s no use fighting it. I’m going to try and not let it bother me anymore.
And then they all lived happily ever after.
Thank you for making it this far… now have another tease.
