Chapter 37: Get Ready to Move! Get Ready to Move!
Jaime: “What the...?!!”
Hearing Daelyon say that, Jaime’s eyes widened in utter bewilderment.
Wait. Everything had been fine just a moment ago. Why had he suddenly brought this up?!
“Balman!”
Just as Jaime began to wonder whether he had misheard him, Daelyon turned and called out loudly.
The young Gold Cloak hurried forward.
“Pass the order. Be ready to charge at any moment. The instant I give the command, move in and take Tywin Lannister alive!”
“!”
At the unexpected order, Balman immediately wore almost the exact same expression as Jaime.
He stole a glance at Jaime, as though asking what in the world was going on.
“Please, Your Grace, do not!”
Seeing that Daelyon did not appear to be joking, Jaime finally began to panic.
“My father has come to aid House Targaryen. If you act rashly, you may cause panic among everyone who supports us!”
“Please, do not believe the slander of those with ulterior motives!”
As he spoke, Jaime deliberately glanced toward the Master of Laws among the crowd. There was no mistaking whom he meant by someone with “ulterior motives.”
After all, as Jaime saw it, King Daelyon had only recently awakened and was as innocent as a blank sheet of parchment.
He did not even know the renowned Cregan Stark. How could he possibly have grown wary of Jaime’s father, a man he had never even met?
This had to be the work of that scoundrel Symond Staunton!
That man was utterly despicable!
“I never said your father had done anything, Lannister.”
Daelyon merely replied calmly, “But after fighting wars for so many years, there is one thing I understand perfectly well. It is always better to guard against trouble before it happens. Always prepare for the worst, and never shy away from precautions simply because they are troublesome.”
“Besides, if your father is truly so loyal to the Crown, then he should have no hesitation about coming to King's Landing alone.”
“After all, only then can we trust him completely, can we not?”
Jaime was left speechless.
The reasoning was sound, but he knew his father’s temperament far too well.
Even if Lord Tywin had come to aid the king, he would undoubtedly see himself as the “savior” and would never willingly make concessions.
And Daelyon clearly was not the sort to swallow his pride and compromise either.
“Don’t worry, Kingsguard.”
Just as Jaime began worrying about what would happen when the two sides met, Daelyon gave him a firm pat on the shoulder.
Jaime looked up in surprise and saw the Regent’s handsome face beneath the sunlight, wearing an exceptionally warm smile.
“Even if things truly reach the point of no return, we still have you, don’t we?”
At those words, Jaime’s tangled thoughts immediately settled, and he was deeply moved.
So he really does trust me!
“I will do everything in my power to persuade Father to cooperate with all of Your Grace’s decisions!”
Jaime clenched his right fist and struck it firmly against his chest, his expression solemn as he added, “Although I do not believe he would do anything against the Crown, if necessary, I will intervene.”
Daelyon: “???”
Now it was his turn to be confused.
Looking at Jaime’s resolute expression, Daelyon was certain the young man had badly misunderstood him.
What he had meant was simple. Even if they failed to capture Tywin as a hostage, they still had Jaime, his eldest son, to use as leverage.
And Jaime...
Was this boy really a Lannister?
Daelyon shook his head. He could not be bothered to explain, so he merely gave Balman a meaningful look.
Balman immediately understood and withdrew into the ranks.
...
“What do you make of this Daelyon Targaryen, Tywin?”
On the Lannister side, Tywin and his younger brother Kevan rode abreast at the head of the column, with thirty of the finest knights of their house following behind.
As they rode, Kevan could not help voicing his doubts to his elder brother.
“A legendary knight returning from the dead? The whole thing is utterly absurd.”
“Most likely someone Aerys found somewhere and dressed up for this farce, hoping to frighten the rebels and those wavering nobles of the Crownlands.”
Tywin gave a disdainful snort.
“That is exactly the sort of thing he enjoys. The seed is strong, I suppose.”
“The Targaryens have always been obsessed with magic, fire, and attempts to bring dragons back to life. Yet they fail to understand that in this world, nothing is more powerful than real, tangible power.”
“I almost hope Daelyon Targaryen truly has returned from the dead. Then we can toss him into that lake outside Casterly Rock.”
Tywin actually made a rare joke.
Kevan immediately smiled and nodded in agreement.
After all, it was said that Daelyon’s dragon had frequently visited Casterly Rock in the past, landing there even more often than at King's Landing.
Neltharion was so enormous that his usual landing place outside Casterly Rock had been crushed into a vast depression more than a hundred meters across, almost like a natural basin.
Later, groundwater seeped into the hollow. Over time, it accumulated until the crater became an artificial lake.
The scenery there was pleasant, making it a favored place for lovers to meet in secret. It was even said that more than a hundred Lannisters had been conceived there after their fathers planted their seed.
“But that is impossible.”
Kevan clearly did not believe the story either. Smiling, he continued the jest.
“If he truly had returned, he ought to be riding Deathwing out to burn the rebels to ash right now, not sitting meekly in King's Landing waiting for us to come to his rescue.”
“Hahahaha!”
The knights nearby burst into laughter.
Even those farther away who had not quite heard the joke joined in despite having no idea what they were laughing about.
After all, when your lord makes a joke and everyone else laughs, would you dare remain silent?
Did you still want a place in the Westerlands afterward?
Just then, the rapid pounding of hooves came from behind.
A moment later, a huge figure on horseback galloped up alongside Tywin and Kevan.
The man’s size was almost absurd. Even though the warhorse beneath him had been carefully chosen for its strength, it was still panting heavily beneath the combined weight of the giant and his thick armor.
Horse and rider looked badly mismatched, almost like a grown man astride a donkey.
“Everything is arranged, my lord,” the giant said, his voice muffled beneath his visor.
“At your command, we’ll charge at once. We’ll take the Lion Gate before those men have any chance to escape!”
Tywin nodded without speaking.
Kevan, however, immediately frowned.
“You had The Mountain arrange men for an assault?”
“Is that not a little rash, Tywin?”
Tywin answered coldly, “When discussing official matters, address me by my title.”
Kevan froze for a moment, then immediately corrected himself.
“I mean, my lord, is this not somewhat ill-considered? Jaime is still inside the city. He is your eldest son. If something were to happen to him...”
“I know,” Tywin interrupted, not a trace of emotion in his voice.
“But that does not mean he stands above the interests of the house. And with his skill at arms, if he wishes to protect himself, there should be no one in King's Landing capable of stopping him.”
“But what if he insists on siding with House Targaryen and tries to stop us?” Kevan asked worriedly.
A sharp gleam flashed through Tywin’s eyes.
“Then that will be his choice,” he said coldly, his tone leaving no room for argument.
“No matter what happens, the interests of the house come first.”
With that, he dug his heels into his horse’s flanks and urged it forward, his voice carrying its usual unshakable confidence.
“Do not worry, Kevan. Jaime is my only son. I trust that when the moment comes, he will make the correct choice.”
“Tyrion is your son too...”
Kevan had only just begun to object when Tywin’s warhorse broke into a trot, leaving him staring at a receding figure of crimson and gold.
The lion emblazoned upon Tywin’s cloak had its bloody jaws stretched wide. With every stride of the horse, the fabric rippled, making those jaws open and close as though the beast were poised to devour its next victim.
