Chapter 111: The End of the Exchange Meeting
“Hey, Azuma, you look pretty out of it. Did you not sleep well last night, or have your injuries still not healed?”
“I thought you were mostly recovered already.”
Satoru Gojo’s curious voice snapped Tōru Azuma out of his daze. Faced with the question, however, he merely shook his head and forced a smile.
“It’s nothing. I’ve recovered pretty well, but I still feel a little uncomfortable, so I really didn’t sleep much last night.”
His tone sounded sincere, but it was only an excuse. There was another reason he hadn’t slept well.
Yesterday, after turning down Ranko Kanzaki’s baffling request, he had hurriedly fled the infirmary and caught up with the others, who had only left a short while earlier. Together, they went into downtown Kyoto and bought a few things.
That night, however, they didn’t return to the hotel where they had been staying. Instead, they spent the night at the Kyoto Campus.
Now that the results of the competition were settled, there was no longer any need to worry about the Kyoto Campus trying some underhanded scheme to interfere with them.
If anything, the Kyoto Campus now had to make sure they were safe and properly accommodated. Otherwise, people might think they had become sore losers and deliberately started targeting the Tokyo students. Their reputation had already taken enough of a beating. If that happened, whatever dignity they had left would be ground straight into the dirt.
And indeed, nothing happened that night.
Tōru Azuma, however, had a bizarre dream. That was the real reason he hadn’t slept well.
In the dream, Ranko Kanzaki suddenly appeared at the gates of Tokyo Jujutsu High with an inexplicably swollen belly. She sat there holding up a sign accusing him of being a heartless scumbag, utterly shameless, a man who toyed with a young girl’s feelings and refused to take responsibility afterward, along with plenty of other accusations. Naturally, the spectacle attracted quite a crowd.
Among them were not only Mei Mei, Utahime, and Shoko, but also many female characters who had not even appeared yet, including Yuki Tsukumo, Riko Amanai, Mai, Maki, Nobara, Angel, Takako Uro, and many others.
There were even several faces he couldn’t make out at all.
Just as he was desperately trying to explain that absolutely nothing had happened between him and Ranko Kanzaki, someone suddenly stabbed him in the back.
The shock jolted him awake.
He knew it was nothing more than a vague manifestation of his fears about some possible future, but the dream had felt so real that it left Tōru Azuma deeply unsettled. After waking from it, he hadn’t managed to fall asleep again.
Seeing the lingering unease on his face, Suguru Geto, standing nearby, seemed to realize something. A peculiar expression crossed his face.
He didn’t say anything about it, though, and simply looked toward the distance.
“Anyway, the exchange event is over now. You can get some proper rest after we get back. Though I wonder... how much longer Yaga-sensei plans to talk with the people from the Kyoto Campus.”
At his words, everyone turned toward the two men talking not far away.
The Kyoto Campus had known they would be leaving that morning, so several people had come specifically to see them off. Yoshinobu Gakuganji was once again leading the group, accompanied by several assistant managers, along with Shinsuke Miiwa and Makoto Kamo, whom they had met before.
They were all fairly familiar faces, though a few people were conspicuously absent.
Tōru Azuma wasn’t surprised that Shō Zenin hadn’t come.
Forget seeing them off. It was questionable whether the poor guy would even make it through whatever awaited him back home unscathed.
After all, the Zenin Clan had entrusted him with one of the family’s trump cards, only for him to suffer such a humiliating defeat. For all Tōru Azuma knew, once Shō Zenin returned, they might strip him of every means he had to fight and toss him into a horde of Cursed Spirits.
Remembering certain events from the original story, Tōru Azuma silently mourned Shō Zenin for a moment.
Kenichi Kamo’s absence, however, was somewhat strange.
That Elder had always seemed unusually interested in the group. On an important day like this, it would have made sense for him to come along and watch them leave.
Yet he was nowhere to be seen.
Had he received the same treatment as Shō Zenin?
Probably not. Anyone who had risen to the position of Elder was unlikely to face such severe punishment even after making a mistake.
Maybe he was simply too embarrassed to show his face.
Still, there wasn’t much point dwelling on those two.
What Tōru Azuma really couldn’t understand was why Ranko Kanzaki hadn’t appeared.
After a full night of rest, she should have recovered by now, right?
Of course, it wasn’t as though he wanted to say goodbye to her face to face or accept her proposal or anything like that. If anything, her absence actually made him feel slightly relieved.
If she showed up here and suddenly blurted out something shocking like she had yesterday, he genuinely wouldn’t know how to respond.
He was simply worried that yesterday’s Black Flash might have injured her more seriously than he had thought.
Meanwhile, Masamichi Yaga was discussing the exchange event with Yoshinobu Gakuganji.
“The quality of Tokyo’s students really is impressive. With those kids around, I doubt we’ll have much hope of winning the exchange event this year, next year, or even the year after that.”
“Maybe we should consider changing the format in the future. We could compete in... something else.”
Hearing the resignation in Yoshinobu Gakuganji’s voice, the corners of Masamichi Yaga’s mouth lifted into an almost imperceptible smile.
“That’s not something I have any say over. You’ll have to discuss it with our principal.”
If the students behind him had seen that smile, they probably would have found it terrifying.
At school, Masamichi Yaga almost always wore a stern expression. Forget smiling. Even a few unnecessary remarks were enough to earn a scolding from him.
Yoshinobu Gakuganji, however, knew his personality well enough not to be surprised. Instead, he quietly revealed a bit of inside information.
“You might want to start thinking about it now. From what I’ve heard, the principal at Tokyo Jujutsu High hasn’t been in very good health lately. He’s already considering stepping down and bringing in someone new.”
He didn’t state anything outright, but the implication was clear enough to make Masamichi Yaga raise an eyebrow.
“I see. By the way, why didn’t Elder Kamo come?”
At the question, Yoshinobu Gakuganji fell silent for a moment. A trace of mockery mixed with resignation appeared on his face.
“He probably couldn’t bring himself to show up. Before this exchange event, he assured quite a few people that Kyoto would produce impressive results.”
“And now look at how things turned out.”
Though he was clearly mocking the man, Yoshinobu Gakuganji narrowed his eyes slightly as another thought occurred to him.
“That said, he seems to have been busy with something lately. You’ve probably noticed it yourself. He’s been paying rather unusual attention to those students of yours.”
“I don’t know why, but you’d better be careful from now on. Try not to let any of your students make a serious mistake. Otherwise, he may seize the opportunity to use it against you.”
Recalling the unusual degree of attention Kenichi Kamo had indeed shown his students, Masamichi Yaga felt a faint sense of unease and nodded.
“Understood. In that case, we won’t stay any longer. We can talk again when we get the chance.”
“Mm. Go on.”
After the two finished saying their goodbyes and started walking toward the group, everyone else ended their conversation and prepared to get into the cars.
Just then, the sound of hurried footsteps came from the distance, accompanied by an anxious shout.
“Hey! You people from Tokyo Jujutsu High, don’t leave yet! I’m not there yet!”
At the familiar voice, quite a few people immediately turned to look.
As for Tōru Azuma, who had only discussed certain sensitive matters with the owner of that voice the night before, the corner of his mouth twitched.
Before long, Ranko Kanzaki appeared in front of them.
She looked as though she had run all the way from somewhere quite far away. She was panting heavily, clutching a rectangular box against her chest that was large enough to almost completely hide her body.
When she saw that the Tokyo Jujutsu High group had not left yet, her face lit up with relief.
“Thank goodness! I made it!”
