Steering clear of rock clusters is solid advice for any ship, whether crossing an ocean or the Astral Sea. While an asteroid belt might pose a risk to inexperienced helmsmen, captains of spacefaring vessels are less concerned about the rocks than what could be dwelling inside of one: a plasmooze. Often mistaken from afar for a star or comet, these strange creatures drift from asteroid to asteroid, feeding on the rich metal deposits found within. Despite their peculiar diet, plasmoozes are no picky eaters—they will just as happily melt through a ship’s hull for a quick snack.

Metal Detector. Plasmoozes are rare sights on the planets of the Material Plane, appearing only when an asteroid housing one crashes to the surface. In their new, metal-poor environment, they are driven to tunnel indiscriminately through the ground, desperate for any scrap of food that their molten, plasmatic hands can seize. Dwarven craftsmen, in particular, bear a strong grudge against these creatures for the destruction of statues, reliefs, and other artful stonework that just so happen to stand between the hungry plasmoozes and the veritable buffet of a dwarven mineshaft.

Runaway Fusion. The arrival of a plasmooze is not all doom and gloom, however. The intense heat radiated by these living furnaces makes them subjects of study for thermodynamicists far and wide, who eagerly theorise endless applications for the abundant energy.  Not quite so endless—in fact, practically nonexistent—are suitable ways to contain one. Very few materials can withstand a plasmooze’s extreme temperatures, and none for very long. At least for the time being, a plasmooze goes where it pleases.
