Mornn - Chapter 974 - You’re not supposed to be the impostor

infoAbout This Title

A group of a dozen scientists and officials in uniforms gathered around a computer screen.

The greying man in a white coat behind the keyboard looked like he had not slept all night, he organised files and windows while a man in uniform decorated with many medals started reading off of a notepad.

“Yesterday, 4.32am. A technical fault in the Yarameysk power plant leads to a power outage through the entirety of Northern Hersire. Contact is temporarily lost with Northern Alpha, Beta and Gamma. A few minutes later, Northern Alpha and Beta’s backup generators are online, and contact is restored. Despite our attempts at emergency radio communication, there is no contact from Northern Gamma. Protocol response is initiated by 4.50am the same day,” he said, glancing at another man in uniform.

“Third Aviation unit Major Johns,” the man introduced himself with a military salute, “Following protocol, I was dispatched from New Yaharma by 5am. After a fifteen minute flight at top speed, the mountain range hiding North-Gamma came into view. The entire region was covered by thick fog which covered even the mountain peaks. Upon communicating this, I was immediately called back.”

There were a few audible gasps in the room, many still remembered the incidents from two decades ago.

The other man continued, “As many of you know Northern Gamma was a low security dormant entity containment. It contained fifteen Grade 4 and 5 entities. Entity D48, label ‘Closed Doors’ was among them. It seems that somehow the power outage allowed it to break containment. By 6am, the region was deemed lost, and a proper military response was organized aiming to recapture D48. We had to wait for the fog to recede before progressing. It was not until late that night that the fog disappeared. Our troops started closing in, only for the fog to reappear, suggesting someone else had triggered D48 into action again, by entering a room and closing the door behind them. We could only retreat.

Under an hour later, the fog disappeared again. D48’s methods are very well documented, the fog disappearing this fast suggests that it was suppressed by another entity. This prompted our immediate evacuation.”

The scientist at the computer finally launched the video everyone was waiting for, explaining the rest of the story.

“Due to the ongoing events, the northern hemisphere emergency response satellite was recalibrated to focus on this region. These are the images that were recorded today, from 7am to 1pm.”

The audience was silent as the scientist skipped through blurry satellite images of the mountain range and the lone city in the middle, which mostly hosted ECA agents and their families to keep the nearby containment facility running. At first, the city was immobile like a painting. Around noon, there were a few flashes of light through the city streets, but the image was too low resolution to really tell what was going on. Then, about an hour later, the footage suddenly turned pitch black.

“Is there an issue with the recording?” Someone in the audience asked.

“No,” the scientist answered, “This is a manifestation of the Grade 3 entity E12, ‘Dream Eater’. Its files have been declassified for everyone present, you are all expected to memorize it by tonight, so I will skip the details, that is not the main point, however, please keep watching. This is what happened half an hour later, just twenty minutes ago.”

“Oh my–!”

“By the gods!”

“Was it a Stornian attack?!”

The scientist shook his head and lightly raised a hand, silencing the room, “Despite appearances, no radiation has been detected. This explosion is estimated to be of a yield of about 150 megatons. That is more than our current strongest nuclear weapon. Our best guess, at the moment, is that it was the work of another slumbering entity from facility Northern Gamma that has awoken. There is only one serious candidate for this. Subject S109, The Necromancer,” the scientist announced, an image of Sofia and Pareth’s bodies being excavated from an ancient tomb by people in hazmat suits appearing on the screen. “Grade 5 S109 will temporarily be upgraded to Grade 3, relabeled E17. We will now begin a recapture operation as we investigate other possibilities…"

Right away, the man who had started the meeting spoke again, looking at one of the younger military men in the audience “Lieutenant general Remsei, you are to personally lead the recapture operation, starting immediately.”

Remsei stood at attention, “At your will, Commander! Requesting authorization to use entity E4 ‘Wishing well’ to ascertain the situation.”

“Request granted. Allocation is one ton Gold, three tons silver. Get the most you can out of it. I want everyone on deck until this is under control!”

Before even reaching the village, Sofia was surprised to see everyone rushing indoors. Even the people working the fields ran to their cars, barns and grain silos. Soon the entire village looked just as empty and lifeless as the city she had just destroyed.

When she got closer, she heard the blaring alarms that continuously echoed through the village. In between long and loud noises, a powerful male voice issued commands.

‘TAKE REFUGE INDOORS AND TURN ON THE RADIO OR TV. THIS IN NOT A DRILL. TAKE REFUGE INDOORS IMMEDIATELY.’

“Oh. This is my fault, isn’t it? That’s not going to make things easier…”

Pareth vaguely gestured at both of them being literal demons, which made Sofia grimace under her helmet.

“I know, I know… I barely even look human anymore, even without that, anyway… But guess what? We already had to deal with this last trial. I came prepared this time!”

Sofia and Pareth both landed some distance away from the village.

Canceling the demon form, Sofia turned off her armor, cut her wings, and used VPPV to make herself look normal. Making her teeth, hair and nails look more natural and not glowy was easy enough, but adjusting the color of her golden arm was harder, and so was dimming all the [Runelord] runes all over her body until they were impossible to notice all while keeping the skill active. The part she previously could not do much about, however, was her horns. But now, thanks to accessories she had bought for the occasion, she could turn the two glowing things invisible just by tying cute enchanted ribbons at their base. The illusion was not perfect if someone looked too closely, but it was good enough for how cheap the items were. The human disguise was finalized with some cheap clothes Sofia had in stock which seemed close enough to what the people she had seen rushing into the houses were wearing. The only strange-looking thing left was her black lace glove and the rings under it, but that she could not take off.

After that, Pareth hid in Sofia’s storage ring, and Sofia flew back up.

She sought out a good house to get into at first, but noticed a middle-aged farmer barrelling down a road between barley fields on an open car with large rear-wheels. It seemed he had been far out when the alarm started so he was still rushing to his house.

I assume that blue farmhouse is his… It’s quite isolated… That will do.

Driving into his large courtyard after rushing home from the forest due to the emergency broadcast, Jeremy was shocked to see an unknown tall blonde woman banging on his door. Because of the alarm’s noise, she seemed not to have noticed him approaching with his tractor.

He quickly parked in the middle of the courtyard and jumped off. He had to get quite close to be able to hear what the woman was saying through the deafening alarms.

“Hello?! Is there anyone inside? Helooooo!!! Please let me in!”

Jeremy walked up to the porch, shocked that the woman was even taller than he had first thought, he had to raise his arm to tap her shoulder.

She yelped in surprise and turned around, a frightened expression on her face. Despite her height, she was blindingly beautiful, and looked about just as old as his own daughter.

“Ah, sorry, sorry. Do you have nowhere to go, Missy?” he asked, almost having to yell to be heard over the alarm.

“I- Yes, I’m not from here, so–”

“Come in, it's too noisy to speak out here.”

The woman nodded and stepped aside to let him open the door. She entered after him and watched him lock the door. The alarm was still echoing, but it was a lot more tolerable from inside.

“Quite worrying, this stuff,” Jeremy started, taking off his coat and mud-covered boots, “Oh, no need to take your shoes off, it’s fine,” he told the woman, seeing her imitate him, “I’m Jeremy. Now, who are you and how did a young lady like you end up at my door?”

“Ah… Sorry about that. Sofia. I’m a sculptor, my manager should still be waiting for me with his car at the town square. We’re on a long trip so I was just taking a short stroll to relax when the alarms suddenly started… ”

“A short stroll? We’re quite a ways away from–”

“Ahah–” Sofia cut the man, “I just have long legs so… Should we not turn on the TV to hear what this is about?”

Jeremy had to stop himself from staring at her legs which were indeed quite long, and just nodded in answer before walking to a large cube-thing in the middle of the living room.
