bigstories - Kenai's Fat Bear Week
About This Title
Kenai is settling into life as a bear pretty well- but as summer fades, something strange is going on with his fellow bears. But surely, it won't affect him, right? Enjoy!
*************
The transformation had been hard for Kenai; what the Spirits had determined, he could only accept. And thus he had been transformed into a bear— he had been driven out of his old tribe, and now had come to be accepted by a tribe of bears— of which he was the smallest and leanest. From scratch, they had to teach him how to live and hunt as a bear, foraging off the lush forests that were fed by a great river, teeming with salmon. It was a steep hill for him to climb— but he was starting to adjust to the way things were.
But as the brief Alaskan summer began to wane, and the sun no longer shone for so long, Kenai noticed a change in his new brothers— they had begun hunting, foraging, and eating to a level of excess that boggled his mind. Tug, the biggest of the bunch, had already eaten so much his gut was dragging on the ground when he lumbered about. When Kenai asked them what was going on, he got an infuriatingly vague range of answers.
"Hah, you'll see little brother!"
"Oh, don't worry about it, it just happens."
"Why? Are you not starting to feel a little hungrier?"
He didn't know what they could possibly be talking about— it didn't seem like there was some festival or even they were planning for; there was no organization or feast preparations being made. They all just seemed to be captivated with eating as much as possible, as if driven by pure instinct.
It was driving Kenai crazy— but he had also learned when to start to let these things go, and just try to follow the example of his fellow bears. It would be fine, he told himself, as he stabbed another fat, juicy salmon from the river— ten more, and he'd have the first proper meal he would have in days.
