Dreamkeepers - V6 sneak peek: Lightin' up

infoAbout This Title

Thumbnail to blueline sketch, pencils, flat colors, and finally lighting and FX- pages are emerging finished from the production pipeline!

The details are present in the initial lineart, but can be hard to interpret without the texture & lighting. These shots I wanted to also add action lines to emphasize energy and impact- which can make legibility even more of a challenge.

Color flats and transparencies come to the rescue. The translucent armor plating reads better, and also no longer obscures the central pose of the underlying Killgear. But there's still not much of a sense of space- which is where light and shadow become key.

Shadows bring dimensionality into focus- but to keep hold of our dynamic feel, I extended the action lines of the pencil work into the cel shaded shadowing, ensuring we didn't lose punch when layering colors in.

The translucent shields read even better with some subtle gloss added, it becomes clear they're transitioning from an exterior to an interior, and, of course-

Those halos need to shine.

You want that extra protection when charging headfirst into danger.

Shading helps clarify additional details, like the mounted floodlights on the gear and weaponry. It's one thing to draw them on in pencil, another when the reader can see the light glaring and cutting through the shadows.

I would include more graphite shading if the project was to remain in pencil, but knowing the full process from the beginning means I can optimize each stage accordingly.

Love little things like adding shine to the see-through panels on the magazines-

And, of course, gotta love the sound effects.

When it all comes together, the action really comes to life.
