About This Title

¿Preparados? ¡Pues adelante con el reto de octubre!

Continuing with the autumn theme, I thought this might be the perfect time to give you a new challenge. For those of you who are new here, let me explain how it works. In this section, I give you a reference image to work from on your own. I’ll share a few guidelines and tips to help you along the way, but beyond that, I’ll give you the freedom to put yourself to the test and see how you can apply what you’ve learned in the class tutorials to your own painting. During this month (and only this month!), I’ll review and comment on your watercolor paintings in the “Corrections” chat, just as I usually do with the other exercises. You have until the end of October to submit your work and receive my personal feedback and advice on your illustration. I think it’s a really fun way to keep learning, and above all, my goal with these challenges is to help you become more confident when tackling your own drawings, while identifying the areas you’re less sure about and the techniques you’re already mastering. Are you ready? Let’s get started with the October Challenge!

Algunas pistas

Cielos violetas y amarillos:https://www.patreon.com/posts/113971033?collection=44687https://www.patreon.com/posts/97552796?collection=44687

A Few Tips

This image of St. Luke’s Church, in Munich, Germany, has a very special charm thanks to the autumn evening light and the contrast between its turquoise dome and the foreground vegetation in golden, reddish and orange tones.

Before starting the challenge, I recommend taking a look at the following tutorials, which will help you approach this watercolor with more confidence:

How to paint turquoise domes:https://www.patreon.com/posts/146222375?collection=44687

Autumn foliage in the foreground:https://www.patreon.com/posts/136466634?collection=44687https://www.patreon.com/posts/87425493?collection=44687

Violet and yellow skies:https://www.patreon.com/posts/113971033?collection=44687https://www.patreon.com/posts/97552796?collection=44687

1) One important tip to make the buildings stand out is to avoid using the same tones for them as for the vegetation. For example, we can use a more muted, transparent magenta for the façades and a darker yellow or English red for the trees directly in front of them. This way, the different planes will be clearly defined.

2) To paint the sky, we can use the masking tape technique we saw in this post:https://www.patreon.com/posts/step-by-step-hot-70290108

3) We can use it to cover the domes, or alternatively, choose softer grays and yellows that will allow us to layer the buildings over the sky afterwards without any problems.

4) When painting the trees, remember that those on the right should have more detail than those on the left. This difference is important for creating a sense of depth.

5) Finally, don’t forget the dark shadow along the lower part of the trees, which will help visually “frame” the illustration and create stronger contrast.

Remember that in the challenges I do not share my illustration for two reasons: to not condition you and because it could create a lot of confusion in the new students that arrive to the platform from July onwards. Don't worry because in this exercise there is no single correct answer, the important thing, besides respecting the concepts in terms of technique, is that you are the ones who give that personal touch to your work and make it unique. So... Go for it without fear!
