Hi everyone! This month, we have an extra video. With Halloween just around the corner, I thought it would be a great opportunity to explore a very interesting technique. We’ll be working in negative, starting with a previously painted surface and gradually lifting out the highlights to create volume and shape. In this case, we’ll be painting a skull, using the background tone as a reference for the darkest and most shadowed areas. For this exercise, we’ll paint the base with black gouache. However, if you don’t have any at home, you can use black watercolor or a dark shade such as Payne’s Grey instead. The main difference will be in the final result, as watercolor will give you a less opaque black compared to gouache.

To bring out the whites, we’ll use a stiff brush to gently rub and lift the paint, then remove it with a tissue, just as we did, for example, in the light rays tutorial https://www.patreon.com/posts/tutorial-62056415 . I recommend using a flat or filbert brush with fairly stiff bristles (Escoda’s Perla range is perfect for this). As you already know, these Paint & Music videos don’t have a voice-over, although I always include some written instructions to make the process easy to follow. In any case, if you have any questions, feel free to leave them in the comments. I hope you enjoy it! I really encourage you to give this technique a try because I think it will surprise you. Have a great weekend!
