About This Title

I was so relieved when Digger's bad reviews absolved me from feeling obligated to see it. Forgot that any movie this notorious will inevitably spark curiosity among a critical (or rather non-critic-al) mass of request-tier patrons. Someone optimistically noted that I did unexpectedly like Birdman; I would remind said individual that Birdman won multiple Oscars including Best Picture (people expected me to hate it mostly because it purports to be a single shot; I actually can tolerate films that plainly fake that while in fact avoiding many oner pitfalls, see also 1917), whereas Digger...probably will not. It's as if I grumbled about having to see Baby Geniuses and someone said "You loved Black Christmas and Deathdream." Anyway, I will endeavor to keep an open mind. Sure was nice when I could ignore some of these whiffs though.

(At least nobody's asking me to sit through the latest Spider-Man. Yet.)

October's random draws are both fairly recent requests (within the past year, I'd guess, 18 months max) that stuck around for a few months and then were replaced. Don Hertzfeldt's three "World of Tomorrow" shorts, which I okayed as equivalent to a feature à la It's Such a Beautiful Day even though they haven't been formally packaged as one, made it to showdown four times without ever winning; don't recall The Big Parade, which I've somehow never seen, ever getting much traction. Looks like I'll have to track down the former (won't be hard), while the latter's available on Tubi and also, in what appears at a glance to be superb quality, on JustWatch's own recently launched ad-free streamer.

When I'll get to those (and to Kosintsev's Hamlet, still pending from last month's random selections) is uncertain, as my life's very up in the air right now. Arrived at my dad's house on Sunday night, intending to help out with basic tasks, and had to take him to the hospital on Monday morning, because merely attempting to stand up out of bed caused him to hyperventilate and nearly collapse. (Bedroom's upstairs, and he was scared of falling even with assistance, so paramedics were called to carry him into the car.) He's been hospitalized at Stanford since with what proved to be a septic infection, and while I have nights to myself, for the most part, my concentration isn't always top-notch. At the same time, there's not a lot I can actually do for him, apart from keep him company, and he's someone who doesn't necessarily want visitors around expressing sympathy all the time (which I get, he and I are a lot alike). Reviews will continue, but likely at a slower pace than usual. I appreciate y'all bearing with me, and of course just being here in the first place.
