Walnut-chan - Chapter 216: Bomb Countdown, Captain's Airborne Rescue
About This Title
The chill of approaching death drew her back taut as a bowstring.
Her lips moved slightly.
"For Justice!"
Hum—
Four pitch-black ghostly shadows burst into being, shielding everyone behind them.
Every bullet Vodka fired slammed into the shadows.
The shadows were pierced in an instant and scattered into nothing.
But in that very instant, Megumi Kato herself had already slipped silently around behind Vodka.
She spoke softly.
"Um."
"I heard you can lose one of these without dying~."
The dagger pressed against his lower back.
Then, without a flicker of hesitation, she pushed it in.
With a wet squelch—
Vodka's whole body went rigid.
His knees buckled, and he dropped heavily to the floor.
The scene went quiet.
So dead silent that even the sea wind blowing into the warehouse sounded clear.
A full ten-odd seconds passed before another piercing round of sirens rose outside.
Clutching her shoulder, Akemi Miyano slowly walked out from behind the crates.
She stared at the sight before her, her pupils trembling.
Had Gin really been driven into a corner like this?
But before she could let herself hope for more, the thunder of rotor blades rolled in from the sky above the warehouse.
With a massive blast of wind pressure, an armed helicopter closed in.
On the ground, Gin suddenly began to laugh, low and quiet.
"Cops…"
Gritting his teeth, he pressed a hand to his lower back and hauled himself upright again.
His gaze locked on Megumi Kato like a viper's.
"Don't move."
"Move again, and I detonate every explosive in the area."
Megumi's pupils contracted.
Gin was gripping a button in his hand.
It looked like a detonator.
"Explosives?"
Akemi Miyano's face drained of color.
Gin slowly shifted his body, opening up the angle between himself and Megumi, and used the movement to swap positions.
"You know the Organization's style better than anyone."
"When there's trouble to be eliminated, of course we blow the scene clean."
"From the very beginning, twenty charges of ten kilograms each have been buried around here."
"Enough to send everything within three hundred meters into the sky."
"Too bad."
"You're the ones who lost."
He said it viciously. But with a knife in his kidney, his stance was in fact already unsteady.
The helicopter outside drew closer and closer.
Soon, the rattle of a heavy machine gun came pressing down from above.
The moment the police cars tried to approach, the bullets forced every one of them to stop at the outermost ring around the warehouse.
Megumi Kato looked at Chigusa and Takina lying on the ground.
Then at Akemi Miyano, pale-faced, blood still pouring from her shoulder.
In the end, she let out a soft sigh.
She didn't bother with Gin's continued threats. Instead, she quietly pulled out her phone.
"I assume you all heard that."
"Please don't come any closer."
"You'd be blown sky-high."
With that, she first hung up the emergency call that had never been cut off.
Then she dialed another, familiar number.
The ringing tone echoed on and on.
Meanwhile, Gin had already grabbed the rope ladder lowered from the helicopter.
Vodka didn't have his toughness. He was simply hauled up dangling at the very bottom of the rope, somehow still hugging two boxes of gold for dear life.
Gin looked down at Akemi Miyano, his voice icy.
"It's over, Sherry—"
"Blame yourself."
With that, he pressed the button.
Beep, beep, beep…
The timed bombs around the warehouse all activated at once.
The countdown showed barely a minute left.
Sixty seconds.
There was no way to carry three wounded people out of the blast radius in time.
As if all the strength had been drained from her, Akemi Miyano slumped to the ground.
So it really did end here.
She had always known that opposing the Organization would come to no good end.
And that no one walked away from it whole.
Click.
The call finally connected.
"Hello…"
"Um."
Megumi Kato's voice was as calm as ever.
"Captain-chan, I think I've run into a bit of trouble."
"Could you come over?"
The answer came back almost instantly.
"Been waiting for you!"
Whoosh.
A strangely shaped kunai landed right in front of her.
The next second, Natsuka's figure dropped down like a shaft of starlight.
He wore a floral shirt and beach shorts, a jetpack strapped to his back, and a pair of wraparound shades perched on his face.
He looked thoroughly unserious.
"Captain?"
Megumi Kato froze for a moment.
[Author's Note: Begging for flowers…]
She wondered just what vacation he had come straight back from.
But Natsuka had no time to explain right now.
Moving fast, he tucked one girl under each arm, scooping Chigusa and Takina against his sides.
Then he puffed out his chest, signaling Megumi Kato to hurry up and climb on.
Her ears went faintly warm.
But her face showed no change at all. She simply reached out and obediently wrapped her arms around Natsuka's neck.
Then the two of them looked at Akemi Miyano at the same time.
How to put it.
She was Haibara Ai's older sister, true.
But she had plenty of problems of her own.
As a peripheral member of the Black Organization, she had certainly done her share of dirty work.
Robbing banks, hiding firearms, running with robbers like that. No matter how you looked at it, her hands weren't clean.
…………
If not for being "Haibara Ai's sister," Natsuka wouldn't have bothered with her at all.
But after a moment's thought, he reached out anyway.
"Whatever crimes you've committed, the law will judge them."
"I can't let you off this easy. Not yet."
As he spoke, markings surfaced on his right hand.
Pinocchio extended a single giant hand and plucked Akemi Miyano off the ground.
With everything ready, Natsuka yanked the switch at his waist.
The personal flying device developed by Agasa Hakase blasted out a torrent of air and shot all five of them straight toward the sky.
At that same moment, the bomb countdown ticked down to its last seconds.
00:19…
00:05…
00:01…
Beep, beep, beep, beep—
00:00.
BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM—
They had barely climbed about five hundred meters when a tremendous wave of heat, mixed with a shockwave, surged up from below.
Red light flared around Pinocchio's body, blocking most of the heat and the blast for them.
But Natsuka's piloting was seriously unreliable.
He wobbled crookedly through the air, drifting every which way.
"Waaaaaah!"
"Urp—"
"Th-this thing... is it really safe?!"
Chigusa, who had only just begun to recover, went white in the face all over again.
The city below shrank further and further.
In the night sky, the wind roared in their ears.
Explosion flames bloomed beneath them like great fireworks.
The chill of approaching death drew her back taut as a bowstring.
Her lips moved slightly.
