Life on Books - LOB Presents: Shadow Divers by Robert Kurson
About This Title
For our November nonfiction club, we'll be reading Shadow Divers by Robert Kurson
About the BookPublished: 2004
Page Count: 375 (Random House paperback edition)
This is one of my all time favorite nonfiction books, and this might be the first time I've ever reread a work of nonfiction!
Shadow Divers tells the story of deep sea divers who explore for hidden treasures under the ocean's surface. Not only a high dangerous activity, but also a highly competitive one as well. When divers John Chatterton and Richie Kohler hear rumors of a sunken German U-Boat off the coast of New Jersey, they know they need to find it, as such a discovery would not only be a career defining find for two life long divers, but it would rewrite WWII history, as such a wreck would confirm that German U-Boats traveled closer to the US coast than we originally believed.
One of the only books to make my palms sweat while reading, Shadow Divers tells the true story of the six year search for the sunken U-Boat, and the real life cost of chasing this dream.
About the AuthorOriginally working as a lawyer after graduating from Harvard Law, Kurson began his writing career with the Chicago Sun-Times as a sports writer. He eventually landed a full time writing job with Esquire as a contributing editor.
Shadow Divers is the first of 4 books Kurson has written to date, with his most recent release being in 2018 with Rocket Men: The Daring Odyssey of Apollo 8 and the Astronauts Who Made Man's First Journey to the Moon
