You always take your hands for granted, never guessing that any time you use them might be your last. Touching up your mascara, for instance...no woman ever thinks to herself, "wow, I'm so glad I'm able to hold this little brush between my fingers with such precision, really glad I'm not stuck with big stubby elephant feet for the rest of my life."
A little gratitude and a little humility can go a long way. Doesn't take much to convince people that you're capable of basic human decency, to make them think to themselves, "y'know what, at least she rejected me in a polite way, I think I won't surreptitiously turn her into an elephant."
So many of us just float through life, expecting that we'll always be who we are, that we'll never face any negative consequences for our actions.
And some of us eventually learn the hard way.
