AUTHOR MARC ALAN EDELHEIT - “Send a legion,” he said. Should’ve specified how many men he expected to come with it.
About This Title
Rome had a retirement plan. Sometimes, someone else paid for it with their farm.
In this historical short, I look at Roman veteran colonies: settlements that rewarded former soldiers and helped Rome hold conquered territory.
For local families forced from their land, those colonies could become a daily reminder of everything they had lost. At Camulodunum—modern Colchester—resentment toward the veterans helped fuel Boudica’s revolt.
As a military fantasy author, I find this side of history particularly compelling. The fighting might end, but the consequences of conquest could shape lives for generations.
