About This Title

Hello everyone,

I've been playing with the curriculum focus for this month and thought you might like to join me!

You can watch a silent timelapse of my digital art process in the video above, or watch a quiet, real-time video of my sketchbook process here. Beautiful Bluebells will be getting a version with voice-over soon where I talk about my process as I go.

The learning focus this month is exploring depth in composition with a foreground, midground and background.

If you haven't already, you can download this month's PDF at the link below

I set the challenge this month to be: draw a subject (a character or object) in the middle of a page, and then add a background behind them and a foreground in front of them.

I drew a couple of simple sketches on scrap paper first, and then drew a full page illustration in my sketchbook.

I quite liked the composition, but I didn't like the colours that I used from my marker pen collection. I think they're a bit too dark in the background and just not quite the right palette.

It feels to me like the colours are all competing, and I want to have more variation in value (how light or dark the colours are). Although you can definitely have a dark background, it's often easiest to suggest depth when the background colours are lighter and sort of 'fade' into the distance a bit.

So I drew the same composition in Procreate where I was able to better control the colours, and I much prefer this version!

In the digital version I have most of the dark colours in the foreground and on my main subject (the bear), and most of the lighter colours in the background, which helps to separate those layers and give a bit more depth.

Part of the reason for doing this curriculum for me is to have a casual space to try things out, and if I don't like them then I can do another version using what I learned the first time around.

I think they turned out pretty cute in the end!

So here's what I'm learning about composition this month:

Separating my composition into three clear 'layers' of a foreground, midground and background is an easy way to think about depth.

Sometimes it takes a few goes at an illustration to achieve the effect that you want.

You don't have to have a light background and a dark foreground, but it feels like the easiest way to quickly give the illusion of depth.

Increasing the scale of things in the foreground (like the flowers in my drawing) really helps with the illusion that they're up close.

Don't forget to download this month's curriculum pdf guide if you'd like to join in at home.
