Kristin Van Leuven - 87/100 tiny painting challenge for 2026
About This Title
Acorns for #87! I'm excited to show you one last way to use masking fluid this month using the outline method. Sometimes you just need a raised outline for your shapes to do the background without filling everything in with masking fluid. This helps us to get the flowy wet into wet soft background without painstaking negative painting. We still have to be careful not to paint inside the masking fluid lines, but it's a much quicker way to save the paper and save on masking fluid. I had a lot of fun filling in my shapes after removing the masking and acorns are definitely a subject I could fiddle with all day. I can't wait to see how you do with this one. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Paper: arches 140 lb cotton 9X12" paper that I've cut into 3X3" pieces, giving me 12 pieces per page.
Masking: daniel smith fine point
Paint: For this project I am using a split primary palette. All colors are Winsor and Newton, except the manganese is Holbein - cad yellow deep, lemon yellow, cad red, perm. rose, ultramarine blue, manganese, indigo and sap green. The colors I'm using today are - lemon yellow, cad yellow, perm. rose, cad red, and ultramarine blue.
Brushes: round 4 & 10 - Princeton
