Bring the BEEF - ★ Public Poll 07 ✦ Combat
About This Title
HEY GUYS!!
SOOOOO...
I've been thinking about something.
I KNOW. I KNOW.
I've mentioned in previous devlogs that Bring the BEEF would NOT have combat.
AND I MEANT IT.
HOWEVER...
As I've been developing the exploration, equipment, and progression systems, I've started wondering if a VERY simple combat mechanic could actually make the game more fun.
AND BEFORE ANYONE PANICS.
NO. WE ARE NOT TURNING THIS INTO DARK SOULS.
I'm imagining something incredibly simple, like swiping across the screen to attack enemies.
Quick, satisfying little encounters. Nothing complicated, nothing stressful, and ABSOLUTELY no endless grinding.
I still want BTB to be a cozy game where you can turn your brain off and enjoy yourself.
BUT HERE'S THE THING.
Adding combat could also give us an excuse to introduce a separate Player Level progression system!
So we'd have TWO different progression systems:
ISLAND LEVEL — Rebuild the island, unlock locations, attract new residents, and upgrade buildings.
PLAYER LEVEL — Increase your HP, buy better weapons and armor, become stronger, and unlock new exploration possibilities.
AND ANOTHER THING!
This would actually give certain characters and businesses a much bigger purpose in the game.
We already have Blacksmiths, Armorers, weapon sellers, and all these wonderful beefy men whose entire professions revolve around making things that, currently, you don't really need.
I MEAN...
WHAT EXACTLY ARE WE BUYING ARMOR FOR?
TO LOOK PRETTY WHILE PICKING OLIVES???
With a simple combat system, those characters could sell weapons, armor, upgrades, and equipment that actually matter to your progression.
AND WE COULD EVEN USE THIS FOR EXPLORATION!
For example...
Imagine you're trying to unlock the Training Grounds.
because MAYBE thats where you'll unlock Arthur
BUT THERE'S A PROBLEM.
A giant swarm of angry bees has decided that the entrance belongs to them.
BECAUSE OF COURSE IT HAS.
And you can't enter until you deal with them.
Maybe you need a decent amount of HP, better armor, or an upgraded weapon before you can survive the encounter.
So suddenly, improving your character isn't just about watching numbers go up.
IT ACTUALLY HELPS YOU EXPLORE AND UNLOCK MORE OF THE ISLAND.
And I kind of LOVE that.
It could give us another layer of progression without relying on repetitive resource farming.
BUT BUT BUT...
Here's where I'm starting to question myself.
ARE WE MAKING THIS GAME TOO COMPLICATED???
Because we already have exploration, relationships, affinity, island reconstruction, collections, fishing, minigames, quests, and approximately 150 beefy men with emotional problems.
DO WE REALLY NEED COMBAT TOO???
I don't want Bring the BEEF to become a game where you need a spreadsheet, three YouTube tutorials, and a master's degree in RPG mechanics just to visit the damn Tavern.
The entire philosophy behind BTB is that progression should feel rewarding, not exhausting.
I don't want you fighting the same stupid mushroom 75 times because you need three more pieces of wood to upgrade your bathroom.
THAT'S NOT THE BEEF EXPERIENCE.
So if we do add combat, it would need to remain extremely simple, fast, and naturally integrated into exploration.
And most importantly, FUN.
SOOOOO...
Should Bring the BEEF have a simple combat system?Nothing is decided yet!
I know I've changed my mind about a few things during development, but that's exactly why I love sharing this process with you guys.
I'd rather explore an idea, ask for your feedback, and make something genuinely fun than stubbornly stick to a decision just because I made it three months ago.
And I'm genuinely curious whether you think this would make the island feel more alive, or whether we're starting to add too many systems.
SO TELL ME.
DO WE WANT VIOLENCE ON THE BEEF ISLAND?
P.S. The Island Administration would like to remind everyone that combat without a valid permit is strictly prohibited. Combat permits are, unfortunately, not currently available.
