This Week's Movie Releases Film of the WeekI always find it slightly annoying when I do this section and then a day later end up watching a film that I just know would be the pick. I need to start jotting my thoughts down rather than relying on a hazy memory but I will try my best regardless. Last Sunday I watched Sorry Baby - a dark comedy starring, written by & directed by Eva Victor. It follows a college professor trying to get her life back on track after a traumatic event. Agnes (Eva Victor) is stuck in the same location, working at the same college that she studied at meanwhile those close to her move on with their lives. This film manages to balance both humour and heartbreak incredibly well without the tones feeling at odds with one another. Eva Victor reminds me of Phoebe Waller-Bridge with her style of humour and delivery. I thought the locations, mainly filmed in coastal towns in Massachusetts, provided a gorgeous yet lonely setting for Agnes which perfectly contradicted how Agnes was at odds with her self and her emotions. It's a cosy film with a very dark, yet important, subject matter at the forefront which again feels like genius work from Eva Victor. John Carroll Lynch has a brief scene yet nearly manages to steal the whole film and Naomi Ackie is just as good. You can watch the film on Mubi with a free 7 day trial (no add just being helpful lol)
We've had a bunch of new members since Obsession which has been wonderful! For anyone new, my name is Liam and I'm the producer of the Patreon. I'm Cam's friend outside of the 'industry' (wanky word I know); Cam asked if I wanted to get involved with the Patreon just because of how much I love film which is really cool. I write this newsletter each week with the week's movie trailers, news, releases and I also add in a movie recommendation at the end or just ramble about what I've been watching that week. Also, if there's something out that week that you read in this and think 'that looks decent I might go see that', if you click on the movie poster it will take you to the film's trailer. You will also see my name quite regularly replying to comments and in community chats so hopefully, if you were confused, you won't be anymore!
I will be joining Cam in the confessions & unpopular opinions LIVE stream next Sunday which I'm very excited for - even if just to prove I am a fully functioning, actual person.
