Secret Base - An NCAA investigation, 158 personal fouls on one play, and “dogs” “peeing”
About This Title
The Egg Bowl beef really had it all.
If Ole Miss is a cavalry officer's sword, then Mississippi State is a rocket-powered sledgehammer. Each tool goes about its task in wildly different ways, but their purpose is the same: destruction. And that has been the name of the game every time these schools have played football since the start of the 20th century.
College beefs are tricky because it's not always clear when something jumps from traditional rivalry to beef. By the time I got done writing this episode, I realized this one had been even more difficult (or, special) because for the state of Mississippi, to my outsider eyes, it seems to have always been what others would consider beef. The feud between Ole Miss and Mississippi State has carried a weight that feels unique. The issue was the football itself was not on a level to get all us dummies to regularly tune in and see the rivalry in its proper light. Once it did spill out onto a national stage though, everyone was treated to one of the wildest, most bizarre, and strangest periods of beef college football has ever seen.
That's just my two cents though. And I would not have ever been able to cobble together that meager sum if it were not for the incredible work by some of our legendary former colleagues. First, Steven Godfrey, our old pal, could've written the book on this era of Mississippi football. He didn't write a book though, he just made a whole TV show about it. I hit a point of trying to avoid his bylines because I felt like I was overdoing it. So then I dipped into the works of Jason Kirk, Alex Kirshner, Richard Johnson, Jim Lohmar, and the entire crew over at Red Cup Rebellion.
Thank you to all of them, thank you to all of you for being here, and for anyone wondering: yes, I have been replaying Fallout 4 with a melee build.
