Here is the new fretboard animation for our Tom Jobim project: Brazilian guitar luminary Raphael Rabello playing Jobim’s Retrato em Branco e Preto with Ney Matogrosso. Please note that this is my 6-string adaptation of a performance played on a 7-string guitar. I don’t own one, and I’m guessing most of you don’t either, so I worked out how I would play Rabello’s voicings on a regular 6-string guitar.

Why are we playing this piece? Not just because it’s Jobim. Maybe you’ve already noticed what we’re getting at. If not, don’t panic — Froggy will puzzle it all together by the end of the week. We’re analysing two more pieces before making one video that strings all of these recent Jobim studies together.

I’ll leave a link to the original performance below because the complete thing is absolutely worth watching. This animation is meant to help you get close to Rabello’s actual fingerings, while also making it easier to see how he connects these chords with some top-tier voice leading. Let me know if you enjoy this performance and the Jobim project — or if you’d rather have me return to J. S. Bach and Barry Harris before Froggy gets completely lost in Brazil.
