About This Title
So here is the first part of the new project: Jobim’s Samba do Avião as played by Raphael Rabello. We’re going to put this performance onto the fretboard phrase by phrase, finger for finger.
This first video is short, but it focuses on what I think is the most important part: Rabello’s right-hand thumb movement. It has three parts: first, Rabello’s introduction at the original speed with the fretboard animation; then the same section slowed down to 70%, so we can actually understand what he is playing; and finally, my attempt at reproducing that thumb movement after hours of zooming in, slowing things down and trying to see exactly what Rabello is doing.
I checked every decent transcription and arrangement I could find online and elsewhere, but I couldn’t find a serious, useful attempt at transcribing, explaining or reproducing this particular arrangement and technique. So you know what that means…
It’s perfect material for a Froggy breakdown.
But I’m not a specialist in Bossa Nova or Samba. So I asked Siccas Guitars if they could connect me with an actual Brazilian guitar monster who might be willing to check my observations. I really don’t want to make a mess of this incredible arrangement, so let’s see if a Brazilian can help us.
For my standards, this project is pretty huge, so it will take a while before it’s finished. I even have an inquiry running with a Brazilian TV station, hoping to get permission to show the complete performance. My request has been registered, but I honestly have no clue how long that process might take. For now, I’ll keep working through the performance phrase by phrase and try to get as close as possible to what Rabello is actually playing.
