About This Title
Here is a new PDF showing you my current practice routine for the diminished scale.
I like to start very simply: playing the scale up and down from the D string using my preferred fingering. From there, the goal is to stop it sounding like a scale exercise and turn it into actual musical phrases.
In Part 1 we’re working with two patterns: Skip 2 and Rows of 4
Both are pretty simple on their own, but as soon as we start combining them, we get some really nice sounding phrases. We’re using the G diminished scale over G7. Keep in mind that this scale gives us a lot of interesting dominant colours: G7(♭9), the natural 13, ♯11 and ♯9.
That’s also one of the main differences compared with the G altered scale: here we have the natural 13 instead of the ♭13, plus the natural 5. That extra note is what makes the diminished scale an eight-note scale.
I wanted to take a short break from the Rabello/Jobim project for this PDF because I’m still dealing with the Brazilian TV channel and some licensing questions before I can move forward with everything I want to show you.
So, the Patreon schedule for next week is:
Tuesday: Jobim’s Samba do Avião — Part 2 of Raphael Rabello’s arrangementFriday: Diminished Scale Phrasing — PDF + Demonstration Video, Part 2
In the week after that, I’m hoping the licensing situation will be clear enough for me to continue and eventually finish the Samba do Avião project properly. Please let me know if these diminished scale patterns are useful to you. I’d especially be interested to hear whether combining the patterns helps you get away from simply running the scale up and down.
Have a great weekend,
Alex
