animuL67 - Giant Earbud Charger

The Giant Earbud Charger is the third design in my lineup of 3D printed housings built around the official Apple MagSafe Gen 2 charger.

Like the Balloon Charger and Lollipop Charger, this works a little differently from a traditional charging dock. Instead of setting your phone into a stand and leaving the charger behind when you pick it up, the charger stays attached to the phone.

You can use it on your desk in portrait or landscape, rotate it to find a comfortable viewing angle, or simply pick the phone up and the whole charger comes with it. When you're ready to walk away, just pull the charger off the back of the phone like normal.

The large flat section on the bottom of the earbud also works as a built-in customization area.

I've included my lettering on the model, but it prints face down, so the text is quick and easy to print and can also be edited to say whatever you want.

Add your own name, logo, business branding, or just delete the lettering altogether if you want a completely blank version.

The earbud is printed in two pieces.

The main earbud body prints as one piece, including the lettering on the bottom.

I've included adaptive layer height settings in the 3MF file to help smooth out the curved upper regions while keeping the print reasonably efficient.

There is also a small black insert/detail on the outside of the earbud that prints separately and snaps into place.

Besides making the color change easier and keeping the print straightforward, that separate piece also serves an important functional purpose- push it all the way in to gain access to be able to push the charger out..

The charger presses into the circular opening and should stay securely in place without glue.

As always, different printers, filament, calibration, and settings can affect fitment. Mine stays in place securely, but if you want a little extra security, a small dab of super glue shouldn't hurt.

This isn't limited strictly to iPhones.

The Gen 2 Apple MagSafe charger also uses standard Qi/Qi2 wireless charging technology, so compatible Android phones can use it as well.

The main thing to keep in mind is the magnetic attachment. If your Android phone or case doesn't already have compatible magnets built in, you'll need a MagSafe/Qi2-style magnetic case or an adhesive magnetic ring on the back of the phone or case.

Those magnetic rings are inexpensive and easy to find, and many compatible phone cases already have the ring built in.

Wireless charging support and charging speeds vary by phone, so make sure your particular Android device supports wireless charging.

This is the third design in the lineup, following the Balloon Charger and Lollipop Charger.

I've got plenty of other ideas for shapes and themes, so if people keep enjoying these, I'll keep finding increasingly unnecessary things to turn into phone chargers.
